Kings of Leon talk up newalbum; dismiss 'Sex on Fire'as a “piece of shit”

In an interview with the Toronto Sun Kings of Leon have spoken about the bands new record and dismissed one of their biggest hits.

Asked how the band feels about teen pop stars including Nick Jonas covering Use Somebody at live shows Kings of Leon’s lead guitarist Caleb Followill says that “We obviously get embarrassed when we see a lot of people covering that song, because we feel like it’s been done, but it’s definitely better than if they were covering that piece of shit Sex on Fire ”.

Despite endorsing the critical opinion of the pigeons at the bands now infamous St Louis concert Caleb was keen to talk up the band’s new record.

“There are definitely times when it’s very tropical and beachy,” he explained refering to drummer Nathan Followill recent comments about the album “but there is always that dark chord in there that makes it Kings of Leon. But we have actually done some things on this album that we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I truly feel like with each album, we are getting closer to what it is that we want to do as a band.”

The instrumentation on the record suggests a return to the band’s southern roots with Caleb revealing the album features fiddle, lap steel, trumpet and “a lot of elements that you may have never heard on Kings of Leon [albums]”.

In the interview the band also reveals that they have been listening to Beach House, The Band, Yeasayer, Grizzly Bear, The Drums, Temper Trap, and Kris Kristofferson for inspiration. As Jared Followill, perhaps jokingly, declares “Pitchfork is going to love [the new album]”.

As for the rumoured remix album said to include mixes from Pharrell, Mark Ronson and Linkin Park, Caleb explains that “We kind of put the remix album on hold for a second until we feel like it’s necessary. We don’t want to saturate the market too much and have too many things out there to where people are just like, ‘To hell with Kings of Leon, they are everywhere.’”

Oh yeah? I bet I could write a song TWICE as shit as sex on fire #languagefail
.

lololololololololol

@ gumbuoy - i assume that because it seems a perfect coincedence that so many people on here are praising absolutely everything else they've done except for obty (basically, their one commercially successful album). i apologise for making that assumption, it wasn't aimed at you personally, or anyone else for that matter...it just seems to be the general opinion in this forum so that's why i said it.

I dont like OBTN because it was comerically successful, i dont like it cause it sucked

The funny thing is that most of youze is wrong.
Because Of The Times is the best thing they ever did.
And then it all got shit with Only By The Night.

loltard

Top three KOL no particular order

1. Red Mornign Light
2. Soft
3. The Bucket

My friend saw them in Brisbane on the last tour and she said that the majority of people around her had no care and no knowledge of anything being played that wasn't on Only By The Night.

I dunno if it's been said before either in this thread, but fuck they look like the most boring live band from gig footage i've seen on TV. I have this really vivid mental image of the drummer chewing bubblegum and literally showing no emotion/expression whilst playing and couldn't look anymore unenthused if he tried whilst the singer just looks like a cunt...

Do not want.

My friend said that after sex on fire finished half the crowd emptied out.....fgts

this is the thing that annoys me. i was at the melbourne show and it was exactly the same. i remember seeing them on their first tour when they played in the old shed at the melbourne bdo. they were fantastic. they had a raw energy and enthusiasm that was infectious. i have seen them on every tour since and as the venues have got bigger, they seem have slowly lost that connection with the audience.

when you play to a crowd of 15k people and they sit there looking bored until you play your big new songs, you are going to lack the spark that you used to have. i left the show feeling disappointed with the crowd moreso than the band. i thought they sounded fantastic, but they were clearly weren't enjoying themselves.

i still absolutely love youth and young manhood and aha shake heartbreak and i like because of the times. but i think only by the night is a crap album. i particularly can't stand sex on fire for three reasons. firstly, it has been flogged to death. secondly, there are people that say they are kol fans and only like this song. and finally, i feel that the song does not represent who they are as a band.

maybe that last reason is wrong and it does represent who they are as a band. if it does, then i firmly believe they have sold their soul and i will never go and see them again. i will have to wait until i have heard the next album before making a decision on that though.

you, my friend, are spot on. put quite simply, they've fucking well lost it, youth and young manhood, aha shake heartbreak and because of the times are fantastic albums. because of the times is forgivable because they made it while still not on the fans of sneaky sound systems/sunglasses and satin brigades radar. after that, it all turned to shit...........
