Bjork and Dirty Projectors will finally release a recording of their collaboration, Mount Wittenberg Orca.
The group debuted the piece at a benefit for Housing Works in Manhattan last May, and the project all but faded from memory. At the end of April, they recorded an updated version at Brooklyn’s Rare Book Room studio.
Dirty Projectors founder Dave Longstreth says the music was inspired when Amber from Dirty Projectors saw a small family of whales off the coast of Northern California. Longstreth wrote the songs, and Bjork sings the part of a mother whale. The album will be available for download on June 30th, and all of the profits will be donated to the National Geographic Society.
Longstreth describes their eco-conscious decision in this letter: “We’ve decided to give away all the money that Wittenberg generates to the project of creating international marine protected areas.”
“Only 1% of the oceans are protected in any way and this is a huge problem. We’re working with the National Geographic Society to create areas of sustainability, so the oceans don’t end up like a giant poisonous corpse hugging the continents.”
Mount Wittenberg Orca tracklist:

If you’re so excited and curious about this wonderful weirdness that you just can’t wait until next week, the group has released a few teasers.
