Sigur Ros ‘getting back towork’

Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi Birgisson is busy with his newly released solo album Go and a tour that will feature a highly anticipated slot at Splendour in the Grass, but apparently that doesn’t mean that the band is on “indefinite hiatus”.

Birgisson has told Spinner that “I don’t even know where this word comes from. I didn’t say that. I never heard this word [indefinite] before in my life.”

The singer revealed that Sigur Ros will be getting back to work this year, telling the magazine that “I’m gonna record some other stuff with Sigur Ros when I’m home.”

As for his solo album Birgisson says that he’d “never thought about it seriously until maybe last year when everybody had babies, kind of perfect timing for me just to do something on my own. I had these songs for such a long time, like 10, 15 years, some of the songs, so I decided to have some housecleaning and get it out of my brain.”

Over the last decade Birgisson had written roughly 30 solo songs, which couldn’t be used by the band, as Sigur Ros “write everything together from the beginning, from scratch, all of us, always together, so nobody brings a song to the band”.

Only nine of those 30 tunes made it to the Go album, but we’ll hear more solo material on the Splendour in the Grass tour with Birgisson telling Spinner backstage at Coachella that “I’m playing a lot of songs that are not on the album. It’s only nine songs and we play like 15 on the tour.”
