Coldplay’s April fools
Sat 3rd Apr, 2010 in International News
While perhaps not as amazing as Trent Reznor’s effort last year, Coldplay had a laugh at their own expense with a fragrant April Fools stunt.
Critics may accuse the band of sounding angsty, but on April Fools Day Coldplay offered the chance for the fans to smell the angst announcing the release of an exclusive fragrance packaged in a Brian Eno designed bottle.
The promotional spiel claimed that the band had been thinking about that project for a long time, with Chris Martin quoted as saying that “People like to smell nice and we thought we could help them out.”
Accompanied by a fetching shot of the band’s guitarist Jonny Buckland, the description of the perfume explained that the core ingredients are “sangre, sudor and lágrimas all of which have been sourced from Fairtrade suppliers”.
Though any Spanish speakers would quickly realise that they were being asked to douse themselves in blood, sweat and tears.
