Reading/Leeds line-up revealed

The Reading and Leeds Festivals in the UK have announced a mammoth three-day line-up for this year’s events.

Sharing the same artists over three days in August, Reading/Leeds has revealed a huge mix-bag of performers on the 2010 bill including Guns N’ Roses, Queens Of The Stoneage, Arcade Fire, The Libertines (which according to NME includes Pete Doherty) and Weezer.

Here’s hoping our summer will look a little something like this:

Our festivals are way smaller than European festivals.

We are much further away. Musicians need to be paid for many more days to tour here and flights are expensive.

The costs for bands that bring their own gear are massively increased due to the travel distance.

A weekend ticket to Reading or Leeds costs over 250 pounds.

If Splendour in the Grass made their weekend event/camping tickets $500 or BDO made tickets $250-300 then you would see a substantially better lineup but it would still not be able to compete with a festival of the magnitude of Reading and Leeds.

You did see the 2010 Soundwave line up right? Is a reformed Faith No More not special?

Correct I went to Soundwave, one of the better line ups weve seen. Getting them and BDO getting RATM are two of the better scores theyve been able to get.

The fact of the matter is, BDO is selling out 2 sydney shows with Powderfinger playing as the 2nd biggest band on the day...

Upping the price, upping the talent they could probably still sell out two Syd shows.
Sure the fact that its a travelling festival, rather than the Falls Lorne/Tas set up that festivals such as Reading/Leeds have, that there are substantial costs involved in moving city to city, but those costs would remain the same regardless of the quality of the bands and the cost of the ticket.

This is Australia though... You'll notice that these UK festivals generally have UK bands on them, and American ones have American bands. If you don't like it, move over there?

That is an anomaly with Australian music though. Historically very few bands that have been massive in Australia have cracked it overseas.

For instance, Powderfinger is much bigger in Australia than say The Libertines who I guarantee would be close to the biggest drawcard on this lineup.

You're forgetting something - BDO has a lineup that is traditionally heavy with Australian bands, including one or two major Australian headliners, and the major city shows (Im thinking Brisbane/GoldCoast, Sydney and Melbourne) all sell out, usually in quite a short period of time. Same goes for Splendour.

What motivation is there for organisers of festivals to pay more money to more (as in multiple) big international acts to bring them out here, and presumably have to increase the ticket price dramatically, when they're clearly satisfying the existing market?

And BDO has always intended to be a showcase of both international and Australian rock music... I don't think they have ever tried to create a festival that only has international bands.

That's something that Soundwave has aimed for and achieved.

Easier to do in Soundwaves case when the majority of the bands simply couldn't afford to play out here solo, not to mention pull a crowd anywhere near the size that Soundwave provides.

exactly the point. satisfying themselves with mediocrity. How does the saying go? "If you're not moving forwards, youre going backwards"... You cant just sit on a line up filled with aussie acts and a couple of headliners, if so then why were the internationals that were on the bill 10 or so years ago better than what they are today, yet ticket prices (ignoring inflation etc) were so much cheaper?

Secondly it would be a massive risk for a promoter to take. They could easily fuck up before the tour happened and it would get cancelled.

Thirdly they would only play smallish venues in Australia due to them never being that popular here. If they are touring playing venues like The Metro there isn't much of an upside for a promoter to take a massive risk for.

Im sure raising it $50 and ditched even 1/4 of the aussie contingent and got better quality/more overseas acts that would be a decent compromise. Of course you wouldnt do this over the course of 1 year, if it was a gradual process over a few years everyone would just get on with it...
Youd rather pay $150 and get powderfinger and eskimo joe instead of paying say $200 and getting for arguements sake, Weezer and Blur?

There would be a lot of people out there that would prefer to pay $150 to see Eskimo Joe and Powderfinger. I'm not one of them, but from a business perspective, BDO is a winning formula, and probably the best we're going to get in this country besides maybe Soundwave.

They are bettering themselves each year. The BDO sold more tickets this year than ever before. Just because the bands aren't 'quality bands' in your opinion doesn't mean that the festival doesn't have an impressive line-up. And as Braveheart said, Powderfinger are massive in this country compared to the likes of The Libertines or even Arcade Fire, and are sure to sell more tickets.

BDO will never be able to get the lineups they used to get purely on the basis that they now have a massive amount of competition.

Other festivals have popped up filling other niches so if anything, BDO has become a more mainstream festival. If you look at the commercial success of the 2010 lineup you would probably struggle to find a previous lineup that beats it.

AND there is also a little thing called hindsight. Bands like Nirvana have gained a massive level of acclaim post BDO.

What if Matt Bellamy died tomorrow? In ten years time, would everyone be saying BDO 2010 was the greatest ever?

Its all subjective. I wasn't old enough to go to those original BDOs, so the ones they are producing now, seem pretty good - cos they have some of the biggest bands in the world headlining them.

Its like comparing woodstock to creamfields... totally different strokes for different folks.

Here's my position:

I used to go to Big Day Out regularly, although not back when the renowned lineups including the likes of Nirvana and Soundgarden played it, because I wasn't into music back then.

However, what I'm looking for from a gig and festival has now changed as I've gotten older, and going to Big Day Out no longer appeals to me.

So I agree that I preferred the lineups of previous Big Day Outs to current Big Day Outs.

But I would never presume that my point of view is the one held by the majority - it is my opinion, and nothing more. I would never presume to speak for the entire music listening audience by saying, "This lineup is the worst ever, noone will go to this Big Day Out."

I'm not in their target audience any more, and if you're not either, you should just accept that and move on.

If you have already been to two or three BDOs then you are not in their target audience. They are surely catering to the majority of the lineup, not the old whingers (like myself) who have been to 5+ BDOs.

Their lineup now is quite mainstream and everything about BDO is appealing to the younger festival goers. It is one of the few festivals that 15-17 year olds can attend too.

I also werent at the earlier BDO's, merely mentioning their (in my opinion) superior line ups to contrast the ones were getting at the moment. If some of those line ups played next year I would predict very strong sales.
I also havent pointed out a particularly poor year for a BDO, but the thing is, BDO still do, and im sure quite deliberately, manage to squeeze one or two meaningful acts on its line up each year... highlighting they still want to keep the punters who are getting discouraged by the lack of variety in each years line up.

Anyway, enough whinging by me... just thought I'd point out the shortcomings of Australias biggest festival

big day out is obviously not getting bands like what it used to. It's obvious that no festival in Australia will ever have a lineup like Reading/Leeds, Rock am Ring, Coachella, Download, T in the park, Lollapalooza; as the budget is no-where near to what those festivals have.

i have to admit i was freaking over the moon when Neil Young, Rage Against The Machine, were on the BDO lineup cards as well as NIN, Faith No More, The Offspring, Incubus and Janes Addiction on the Soundwave Lineups but thats only like 2-3 big name bands for each festival.

Big Day Out is very mainstream these days, offering bands that are mostly in the top-40 charts (dizzy, muse, hilltop, cut copy, sneaky sound system, OPERATOR PLEASE etc) apart from the 2 or 3 big name acts. i know my winging here wont do anything but IMO i really think that BDO needs to go like Soundwave and offer 90% international bands, i mean how many Aussie festivals are there to offer Aussie music acts.

Aus need some of these bands back:

Metallica
Slipknot
Linkin Park
Tool
Deftones
Limp Bizkit

Blink 182

If anything bdo should stick to having aus acts, since they have 6 stages to fill, and will sell out regardless, and the other fests, the ones that are struggling to get going, should have more internationals, to draw in the crowd...

I'll be saving my pennies for Rebellion in Blackpool this year! Except for 1 or 2 bands, I don't see too much in Reading worth spending the dollars for.. (in my opinion)

very small i reckon.

firstly i think there could be a visa issue for pete doherty.

secondly it would be a massive risk for a promoter to take. they could easily fuck up before the tour happened and it would get cancelled.

thirdly they would only play smallish venues in australia due to them never being that popular here. if they are touring playing venues like the metro there isn't much of an upside for a promoter to take a massive risk for.

melvin benn, the major man at r&l, has already come out and said that the libertines are not getting back together. they are only doing these 2 shows and that's it. they say should have played years ago, but couldn't get their shit together at the time (can't think why tho....).

I wonder if they signed an agreement that those would be the only two shows for a certain period of time.

I'll be saving my pennies for Rebellion in Blackpool this year! Except for 1 or 2 bands, I don't see too much in Reading worth spending the dollars for.. (in my opinion)
