Noted punk fan, actor and occasional producer Tom Hanks is reportedly in talks to acquire the film rights to the Green Day musical based on the band’s 2004 concept album American Idiot.
Green Day’s drummer Tre Cool and frontman Billie Joe Armstrong joked with American MTV this week that they “start filming tomorrow, we’ve got George Lucas and Spielberg interested.”
However, when asked about the possible film by Rolling Stone, Armstrong revealed that “Tom Hanks and [fellow producer] Gary Goetzman at Playtone are fabulous and they’re friends of ours. And they’ve had access and it’s been great to hear their enthusiasm.”
It seems that Hanks is hoping that his version of American Idiot can be as successful as that other film musical he produced – Mamma Mia!.
