The last thing you’ll get from the Shockwaves NME Awards is a shock. The UK rag’s annual round-up of familiar faces went down at London’s O2 Academy on Wednesday night, and you won’t believe the results (you will).
With 3.6 million votes cast, Big Day Out conquerers Muse took out ‘Best British Band’ (“a great surprise”, lied Matt Bellamy ), while ‘Best Live Act’ went to that other wildcard Arctic Monkeys. UK festival giants Kasabian claimed ‘Best Album’ for West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum and Blur’s triumphant comeback shows at London’s Hyde Park were named ‘Best Live Event’. We hear you, 3.6 million people of the United Kingdom!
The night’s highest honours – ‘Godlike Genius’ and ‘Outstanding Contribution To Music’ – went to Paul Weller and The Specials consecutively. Weller grumbled to press about how Nirvana was shit and British music rules (3.6 million cheers went up), then performed some of his hits. Done and dusted for another year. And so the results…
