Paul McCartney almost aCrooked Vulture

In his ongoing attempt to stay hip, Paul McCartney has revealed that he was “nearly” the bassist in Them Crooked Vultures.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Macca relayed how close he came to being the third Vulture alongside Dave Grohl and Josh Homme: “We went out for a bite to eatÃ¢â‚¬Â¦and Dave [Grohl] told me he was starting this band with Josh [Homme]. I asked him who was playing bass and he rather sheepishly told me he’d approached John [Paul Jones]. So you read it here first; Paul McCartney was nearly the bass player in Them Crooked Vultures. ”

In the same interview McCartney also goes on to defended his appearance on Britain’s X Factor last year, claiming that if it was good enough for Beyonce it was good enough for him.

It seems Sir Paul has forgotten that he was once a member of The Beatles. THE BEATLES!

talent is one thing, but relevance is another... is macca really relevant anymore? maybe the beatles are but i think his solo stuff has really aged in the past decade.

yeah his solo stuff has been God Awful in the last decade.

And tauiwai - that is the way internationally news works m'dear! NME ripped it off the blog COS and COS ripped it off the Daily Mail. Being :international" it has to be reported "internationality" first ;-)

Although why he felt the need to mention it, beats me. Unless the interviewer asked him something specifically about TCV?

PS not all of us read NME so you know, it's useful to have the tidbits pop up on FL.

You can't expect music websites to only post exclusive news content.

That's like criticising the Sydney Morning Herald for posting a story about the Haiti Earthquake on the basis that the New York Times posted a story about it already.

Somebody wrote a bunch of awesome songs years ago....great. Doesn't mean everybody wants them in their band.

And anyway....the Lennon-penned portion of the Beatles catalogue was, and remains superior to McCartney's half (few exceptions...but not many)

I think thats what he was implying, but from the sounds of things, JPJ was pegged for that project from the get-go anyway.

NME is painful reading at the best of times

Unfortunately, in the process all of the above missed the end of that McCartney Quote: Actually, I'm sure it wouldn't have happened but it's an interesting project.

Although, credit where credit's due, his appearance on the X Factor was based more around appealing to kids and families than rock cred, as the article says. So the "wanting to be hip" angle stands

Imagine Paul gently thumbing the strings of his immaculate Hofner bass whilst urging Dave Grohl to play a little less frenetically and instead concentrate on a couple of Ringo-esque fills as Joshua Homme belts out the VOX to 'Silly Love Songs'. Wouldn't work all that well for mine...

Also, I think the intense stage lighting at many of today's rock shows would be a problem for McCartney's moptop which is now so caked in Just For Men that any hint of tungsten would see his head melt in an uncanny impression of the Creature From the Black Lagoon. He was more of a silver fox at thirty than he is now!

As far as 'new' records go, apparently Rod Stewart outsells all his contemporaries by quite a mark (Paul, Elton, Tom Jones). Maybe Rod should have joined Them Crooked Vultures?
