Having ranked highly in our Top Albums Of 2009 with The Eternal, Gossip Girl regulars Sonic Youth already have a follow-up in mind. The New York four-piece boasts an inexhaustible reserve of inspiration, so this is news worth celebrating.

In an interview with BBC 6Music, guitarist Lee Ranaldo remarked, “We’re most probably going back into the studio next year.” While that plan is bubbling away, Sonic Youth is also readying a DVD for release, bringing together footage from its recent Daydream Nation shows and the original tour back in 1988.

As for the current live set, Ranaldo told BBC it’s largely drawn from album number sixteen. “We’re still deeply ensconced in our new record, so we’re gonna play a lot of The Eternal,” he said. “That’s what we’re having the most fun with. We usually try and pick a smattering of stuff from various old records. It could be way old or it could be from the last couple; you never know.”
