The Strokes’ breakout album Is This It has taken the #1 spot in NME’s ‘Top 100 Albums Of The Decade’ poll. The list, decided by “a panel of musicians, producers, writers and record label bosses”, is sure to spark the kind of impassioned debate beloved of editorial teams (hey guys).

The top ten is filled out by a cast of NME favourites, among them The Libertines, Primal Scream, Arctic Monkeys and Arcade Fire. wow mr slater, championing one persons opinion then completely missing the point of it. pure class. reliance on any one opinion source instantly dilutes the quality of your own opinion. moreover, bemoaning of the state of said opinion source at any one time simply implies that you do not have enough constitution to form your own opinions and do your own musical investigation. by overanalysing the output of a publication (whether positively or negatively) you are legitimising their output and if you think katy perry shouldn't be on the cover of RS, why discuss it? (i would argue otherwise, but that is another story) 'decade-end lists' and their ilk should never really be considered in any depth. what they should do is inspire the reader to investigate any unknowns. i'm not saying that music journalism isn't worthy of discussion, i'm not elvis costello. but think about it; is a list really 'music journalism'? it's not, it's a ranking exercise. the idea of assigning ranks to creative output is flawed in and of itself really. go out there and make your own list, if that's how you're inclined. you know what might be better though? actually listening to music. That's a rather boring viewpoint. Anything that encourages discussion is a vaild exercise. Why have a rating system when reviewing albums or films? Why post on a music forum? People are interested in the opinions of others compared to their own. Not everyone is a natural cynic. I am yet to see any evidence of anyone here relying on a publication to form their own opinion for themselves, you are just having a wank in that regard and I think you are overanalysing this thread.
