Having only just unleashed sprawling opus Embryonic, The Flaming Lips have an even more insane project on the boil. Wayne Coyne and his fellow freaks are attempting a remake of Pink Floyd’s untouchable 1973 album Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety. The revelation came in a Q&A session with fans at the Ricardo MontalbÃƒÂ¡n Theater in LA, and has been reported by the L.A. Times.

Helping the Lips in their quest are Oklahoma’s other psych-rock hopes Stardeath and White Dwarfs. Even more intriguingly, Peaches and Henry Rollins will be making guest appearances. We really hope Wayne isn’t having a cosmic joke at our expense, – œcause this sounds bat-shit awesome.

Eleventy-billion people bought it so it's not like people don't know how good it is,but seriously Dark Side Of The Moon is so good.

It is very good. Wish You Were Here is still better.

Dark Side is probably their easiest album to digest.

This'll be interesting.

According to an L.A. Times report, the Flaming Lips are set to follow-up their life- (and death)-affirming LP Embryonic with a full-album redo of Pink Floyd's gazillion-selling 1973 psych-rock classic Dark Side of the Moon.

The Lips version of Dark Side is a collaboration with the band Stardeath and White Dwarfs (which includes Wayne Coyne's nephew Dennis Coyne as a member), and features guest spots from Henry Rollins and Peaches. It will most probably be an iTunes-only release.

The announcement was made last night during a Q&A session with fans at a MySpace show last night at L.A.'s Nike/Ricardo Montalbán Theater. (Check out photos from the gig after the jump and in the photobook here.)

Other tidbits revealed: While Embryonic was the final album of the Flaming Lips' current contract with Warner Bros., they plan on sticking with the label for future releases.

Also, the video for "Watching the Planets" features a nude Wayne Coyne (as well as a bunch of nude bikers). The internet's not ready.

Actually, my favourite Pink Floyd album is Animals. And unlike a lot of people, I really like The Final Cut.

A metal take on DSOTM would pique my curiosity. :D

I wouldn't mind seeing someone have a crack at The Stone Roses.

It would be interesting to see a bunch of current British bands have a crack at reproducing a classic album like this that undoubtedly influenced many of them. It could be like the White Album Concerts with Rogers, Jamieson, Pyke, and Cheney but recorded as an album.

The Final Cut is orrite. I find myself struggling to pay attention the entire way through though.

I'd like someone to have a go at Vespertine by Bjork. That album is perfect because although it's quite technically structured it's pretty raw sounding, so I reckon any band with your standard instrument set-up could do something cool with it, since it's pretty much just electronica and harmonies.
