STOP THE PRESSES: LOOKS LIKE THEM CROOKED VULTURES ARE COMING OUR WAY!

Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones’ much hyped supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures, made its live debut at a sold-out show in Chicago last night, and the initial feedback has been rapturous to say the least.

According to Chicago Times music critic Jim DeRogatis, the trio played a 12-song, 80 minute set, proving beyong doubt that Them Crooked Vultures are “a supergroup that not only deserves that appellation, but which actually is greater than the sum of its storied parts”.

The twelve songs played included tracks called Elephants, New Fang and Nobody Loves Me with the trio being assisted by Queens Of The Stoneage collaborator Alain Johannes on second guitar and occasional keys. Considering the inclusion of Johannes in the live setup, it comes as no surprise that the Vultures sound was described by DeRogatis as “…hypnotic but intense stoner rock [with the] more spacey and bluesy sounds of Homme’s earlier group, Kyuss”.

According to DeRogatis, Homme took on the role of lead-vocals for most of the evening whilst Dave Grohl was back where he belongs, “hammering his snare with both hands to create a massive backbeat, firing off rapid fire single-stroke rolls that made his single bass drum sound like two”.

Who needs a Kyuss reunion when you have The Crooked Vultures?
