Grizzly Bear cracks the US Top10

The furiously-hyped Veckatimest from Brooklyn four-piece Grizzly Bear has muscled into the Billboard Top 10 in the US. Coming in at #8 in its first week (that’s 33,000 sales these days), the album is keeping some incongruous company. Other high-rankers include Hannah Montana, Marilyn Manson, Eminem, Green Day and Lady GaGa.

Veckatimest has been riding high on a wave of positive press, including a rousing endorsement from FasterLouder’s own SuperFurry: “The band has worked tirelessly to ensure every aspect is warranted, in context and beautifully executed.” It mightn’t be too long before we get to hear the new songs, either, with Dan Rossen telling FL the band is planning an Australian visit in January 2010.

Veckatimest is out now on Warp through Inertia.

Why is a US band making it big on the US charts news on an Australian website?

I know, I know it is in International news but seriously...

I've only managed to hear 2 of their tracks but everyone keeps blowing so much smoke up their asses I feel I should probably see what all the hoo-ha is about. Maybe next week.

I reckon it's good just to see something. People complain about Muse international tour articles and whatnot but no one's being forced to read them. It's probably just that there's not that much going on and the FL writers have to do something to pass the time.

I don't really know much about what does/doesn't break the Billboard Top 10, but I think it's pretty interesting that a band of Grizzly Bear's (relatively) obscure statue can get to the top end of the US charts.

Would be interested to know what the level of publicity has been - aside from people like me foaming at the mouth - can't imagine it's been on constant rotation at the commercial stations.

Mind you I was really surprised to see how little sales were needed to get into the top 10 - does Billboard account for downloads?

Hey, hey! That Muse article got me all excited and shizz that there would be some Australian tour or album news which are subjects both relevant to me. Muse galavanting around the European countryside in cargos and scarfs is not relevant to
me.

A US band in the top 10 US charts. Really? But Mr. T made a good point so fair enough. Actually, I don't want to get into this so retract my original statement.

I caught them a week ago at the Town Hall in NYC. Believe the hype people. These guys are phenomenal. It's not often you come across a band of four incredibly talented musicians who can create those sorts of vocal harmonies. Big Day Out isn't the right arena for these guys though, so if if the rumours are true I hope they play some Sydney side shows. I'd see them again for sure.
