Teleprompting Jane's Addiction

Currently on a US tour alongside Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction has been making crowds swoon with their virile swagger. However, they caused a stir on blogs this week when a side-of-stage photo surfaced which clearly shows a row of teleprompters positioned along Perry Farrell’s path.

What most detractors failed to mention, though, was that the shot was taken at the frontman’s birthday concert, not a NIN/JA show. We can only assume he was in no fit state to remember his name, let alone the words to the songs. Amusing, nonetheless.

Of course, Jane’s aren’t the first ones to use a little onstage assistance. FasterLouder has put together quite a revealing list of bands that use telepromoters.

Does it really affect the crowd or the atmosphere of a gig if a singer uses an teleprompter? Chances are 99.9% of the fans wouldn't even realise.

Nick Cave keeps a swag on lyric sheets close-by when he's on stage, and iirc, so does Cedric Bixler-Zavala from the Mars Volta. Orchestras have their music sheets *shrug* ... not sure why this is a credibility problem tbh.

Michael Stipe had lyric sheets when they did Unplugged back in the day, so it wouldnt surprise me if he had an autocue these days.

When New Order played BDO a few years ago, they had one too.

Doesnt worry me, so long as its older artists with a huge back catalogue of stuff to remember. I know they still wrote the songs, and its them singing them...

I have an issue with the fact the Mick Jagger relies so heavily on them - all his mid song banter is pre-written and last year he sang the same verse to Ruby Tuesday twice in a row at a gig cause his teleprompter fucked up...it just seems like such a disconnection from the music and audience..

If you have only a couple of albums, then fair enough, you should remember your own lyrics, but Mick Jagger wrote those lyrics 40 years ago... I'm not going to give a pensioner a hard time for forgetting!!!

Pre-written stage banter is stupid though. No problem with acts rehearsing the show, but the lack of any spontaneity kinda blows.
