Flaming Lips back in thebubble
Tue 21st Apr, 2009 in International News
Those psychedelic ringmasters the Flaming Lips brought out the full stage show for Earth Day in Washington, DC over the weekend. The Australia-bound outfit was the main attraction at the free gala, which centred around a campaign to promote renewable energy and a green-friendly economy. The crowd was warmed into the occasion with sets from multimedia whiz DJ Spooky, prog-rock veterans moe. and Latin rockers Los Lobos.
When the Flaming Lips finally took the stage, there was plenty to dazzle the eye. A white-suited Wayne Coyne wasted little time before climbing into his inflatable ball and rolling out across the outstretched hands. It seems the band is unfazed by the criticisms of rock writer and fan Jim DeRogatis, who reckons the Lips have replayed the old tricks too often.
According to Rolling Stone, those old tricks – confetti, rainbow colours, giant hands and fantastical stage design – were all accounted for at the Earth Day show. The nine-song set, which featured a signature version of Madonna’s Borderline, seemed to be a winner with the gathered throng. We’re eagerly anticipating our turn.
