MGMT barracks for Poland
Thu 9th Apr, 2009 in International News
The City Of Warsaw has enlisted MGMT to help it win the title of European Culture Capital in 2016. The psychedelic pop duo have become the unlikely flagwavers for Poland with a headline slot at the Orange Warsaw Festival alongside N.E.R.D. Obviously all this rather dour, World War II-ravaged city needs is a little Electric Feel to bring it up to speed with the likes of Berlin.
In a rather endearing press statement, the organisers of the festival enthuse: “It is an unusual pleasure to announce the first confirmed performers for this year’s edition of the Orange Warsaw Festival. Plac Defilad in Warsaw will host some of the biggest stars of the international music scene – N.E.R.D. and MGMT. They are unusual groups and are expected to put on an exciting show.”
Free and open to all, the Orange Warsaw Festival (sponsored by the mobile phone company) is just one part of the city’s bid to be considered as Europe’s cultural hot-spot. We have no idea why an event in 2009 will affect the selection in 2016, but good luck MGMT – a country’s fate rests on your delicate shoulders.
