Chamberlin quits SmashingPumpkins

Billy Corgan is now the only true Smashing Pumpkin still holding on, with news that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has departed the band. Corgan issued a statement on Friday with the unflowery epitaph: “Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group.”

Chamberlin drummed on every Pumpkins album expect 1998’s Adore. He and Corgan were the only original band members in the line-up that visited Australia, to mixed reviews, for V Festival last year. The statement concludes: “Corgan will continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins, with plans to head into the studio this spring.”

chamberlain's drumming was one of the few redeeming factors of the pumpkins' comeback album... oh well haha.

Well last time Jimmy left we got "Adore" which is by far my favourite Smashing Pumpkins album, so this could be a good thing. I'm not really fussed, I just want to hear more music.

For all intents and purposes, The Smashing Pumpkins had become the name of the touring band anyway. Corgan was always the one playing the symphony orchestra on the records, as is my understanding. Still, sad to see Jimmy go...hope it's not his Zwan-song...

oh jeez, i can't stand that docoumentary. billy really is a complete ass throughout the whole thing ( as much as i respect the guy). but the concert footage, rehearsal sessions are pure class.

i'm mixed about the whole thing too though. on one hand, billy can still write some bloody good songs (Gossamer, Superchrist, Stellar), so i've got faith that the music will still be great. but yeh, it just doesn't feel like "Smashing Pumpkins" anymore

Here's something to help you remember:

Cast your mind back to 1993. I was 12 back then. One day the video for Today came on the tellybox. I nearly jizzed my pre-pubescent panties. They were rock but they weren't loud. Holy shnikeys I thought, what the hell is going on here? And that Asian chick is wearing a dress and she's hot! Oh no wait, that's James Iha. Well D'arcy looks cool and I like Billy's hair. Then I went and bought Siamese Dream and all was well. After that I was a mad Pumpkins fan. Two years later I'm watching the American Music Awards and the Pumpkins play live. I set my VCR to record and I see Billy with a shaved head and a black skivvy. Strange thought I, where's all that angst? Having seen the video for 'Bullet with Butterfly wings' a week before I knew it had to be somewhere. So I wait for Mellon Collie to drop and I buy it. Wow, a double album! How cutting edge! Especially for a 90s alternative band! There's more wussy slow stuff on the album then I care for but tracks like Zero more than make up for it. One night I listen to the radio and I hear that a member of the Pumpkins died. OH NOEZ, this be the end of the Pumpkins. What in fact happened was touring keys player and Jimmy Chamberlain went on a smack party and sadly Mr. Melvoin lost. Billy got so pissed off he kicked Jimmy out of the band and went even more wussy on Adore. The one saving grace of that album is that you can see Darcy's nipples. I'll tell you, being a 16yr old Pumpkins fan that fuelled a lot of wanks. So Billy starts wearing makeup and dances kinda stupid wearing long robes and shit and I wonder just what the hell happened. Come two years later Darcy leaves and Melissa Auf Der Mar from Hole is in. The Billy Band releases Machina: The Machines of God and the collective world sighs an apathetic grunt of who the fuck cares anymore? You see, between 1991's Gish and 1999's Machina a lot has changed. Had Billy not proclaimed rock is dead and stuck to his roots rather than follow his ego he might actually have put decent stuff out. Then The Pumpkins disbanded, Billy formed Zwan and got Jimmy back in and that album sucked. Then Billy released a solo album full of heartfelt emotion and he put a fullpage ad in the Chicago Times basically talking about himself. After that he reforms the Pumpkins, albeit with a new guitaro and basso and they release a single with Paris Hilton on the cover. No one in the world cares except de-tec-tive who goes stalking them around Australia. And now Jimmy quit again and I just farted.

What does this all mean? Billy should have given up a long time ago.

i like to doco, all the footage in the hotel room with him playing is fantastic.

anyway i've been thinking similarly - one on hand i really don't like Zeitgeist that much. i listen to it, but in my opinion it's absolutely no comparison to their pre-break up albums. but with that said, some of the new stuff like the rehearsal footage on IAGW is fucking amazing, and i love American Gothic. if the next album sounded like AG (well i guess there won't be a next album but you get my point), i'd love it and could get over the whole line up issue. but if all the new stuff sounds... well... crap, then i really don't know what to think any more =(

Yes. After seeing his tirade at the V Festival, I was wishing I'd stuck around in the front row for Duran Duran. There's only so much self involvement I can handle from my rock 'stars', and he overplayed his hand some years ago.

By now you have heard the news of my departure from the Smashing Pumpkins. I will say, without going into any unnecessary details that this represents a positive move forward for me. I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don�t fully possess. I won�t pretend I�m into something I�m not. I won�t do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can�t just, �Cash the check� so to speak. Music is my life. It is sacred. It deserves the highest commitment at every level and the Pumpkins are certainly no different. I�m sorry but it really IS that simple. There is no drama, bad blood, or anything else but a full commitment to music. My best goes out to Billy and I�m glad he has chosen to continue under the name. It is his right. I will continue to make music with the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex as well as pursuing other musical interests. I feel that I have a long way to go and a lot to give. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support through all of this. I am constantly humbled by all of you! It is an honor and a privilege to play music for a living and I don�t take it for granted not even for a second.

I think everyone on here has a clue about you. You might not create some thread everytime you do an "awesome shit" or "wake up at a certain time".
