The NME Shockwaves Awards went down at London’s Brixton Academy last night, and the winners range from the eyebrow-raising to the – œso NME’. It seems readers of the magazine have lost no love for grumbly – œ90s heroes Oasis, voting them Best British Band. The loyalty to Muse hasn’t faltered either – with the Wembley-conquering trio scoring Best Live Band.
Following on from The Manic Street Preachers’ win last year, The Godlike Genius honours went to The Cure in 2009. Robert Smith and co. returned the favour by closing the ceremony with a ten-song greatest hits set. Beginning the Blur revival in earnest, Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon made a surprise appearance to play This Is A Low from 1994’s Parklife.
Other winners of note were V Festival headliners The Killers for Best International Band and everyone’s favourite time-waster YouTube for Best Website (we hear FasterLouder was runner-up).
