Dr. Pepper pledge backfires

Guns – œN Roses – by which we mean Axl Rose – has threatened Dr. Pepper with legal action, after the soft drink company bungled its Chinese Democracy promotion. Dr. Pepper had smugly offered every person in America a can of its brew if Axl’s opus ever surfaced. On 23 November, Chinese Democracy finally arrived, but Dr. Pepper tripped up on its promise. Fans had one day to claim their coupon from the Dr. Pepper website – the same day that website conveniently crashed.
In a letter to Dr. Pepper CEO Larry Young, Rose’s lawyer wrote, “the redemption scheme your company clumsily implemented for this offer was an unmitigated disaster which defrauded consumers and, in the eyes of vocal fans, – œruined’ the day of Chinese Democracy’s release…As we all now know, Dr. Pepper created an expansive and highly-publicized advertising campaign based solely on the exploitation of my clients’ legendary reputation.”
The lawsuit calls for monetary damages and a public apology by Dr Pepper in newspaper ads. Plus, of course, more time for the Land of the Free to claim its free soda.
