From an all-class pool of nominees including Green Day (!), Tokio Hotel (!!) and Britney Spears (!!!), LOL-phenomenon Rick Astley was named Best Act Ever at MTV’s European Music Awards.

The ‘80s pop crooner has enjoyed an unlikely revival via ‘rickrolling’, the side-splitting act of sending a Rick Astley YouTube link disguised as something more worthy. Apparently all that ROFLing didn’t stop MTV viewers voting for their favourite prankster. Other contenders for Best Act Ever included U2 and Christina Aguilera, making for the Weirdest Nominees List Ever.

Elsewhere, emo turkeys 30 Seconds To Mars claimed the ‘Rock Out’ Award, beating Metallica and Slipknot. The win was rather convenient for frontman Jared Leto, who was hosting the ‘VIP Area’ on the night. “Leto has all the hosting charisma of the Microsoft Word paperclip,” surmised The Guardian.

The ceremony, held at Liverpool’s Echo Arena (tres European), was hosted by feminist-icon-at-large Katy Perry. She wore a dress emblazoned with Barack Obama’s face, rode a giant banana and dropped such zingers as, “Girls, it doesn’t matter how big the banana is, but how you sit on it.” Which begs the question – where was our invite?
