Proving once and for all why artists treat the Mercury Prize with such reverence, 2008 winner Elbow has seen a 688% boost to UK sales of its album The Seldom Seen Kid. It’s the biggest increase in unit sales as a result of winning the Mercury, with the record rocketing from 61 to seven in the charts. “This is the best thing that’s ever happened to us,” frontman Guy Garvey gushed at the awards ceremony. It seems that best thing just keeps getting better…

Interestingly, the Guardian reports favourite-to-win Burial has seen sales of his album Untrue multiply ten-fold since last Tuesday’s announcement. Not so anonymous anymore are we, Mr Bevan? Also reaping the benefits of nomination were The Last Shadow Puppets (up 626%) and Parklife visitors Neon Neon (up 435%). Everyone’s a winner, baby.
