Sonic Youth head back to thestudio

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Thurston Moore of alt-rock envelope-pushers Sonic Youth has revealed his band is in the writing stage of a new album. What’s more, it’ll be the first of their records in 18 years to be released on an independent label. Sonic Youth’s contract with the major Geffen Records began with 1990’s Goo and reached its conclusion in 2006 with Rather Ripped. Now Moore and co. are free to look at more grassroots options.
“There’s one label we are certainly going to go with at this point,” he revealed to Rolling Stone. “But I don’t think I’m allowed to disclose that right now. I don’t want to risk having a shit storm … The last four or five records we did were just so compromised by that [major label] situation. But that’s the way it goes.”
The band is expected to enter the studio in November, for a 2009 album release. “I’ve written a half-dozen song ideas. I try not to complete them so much,” Moore conceded. “Last time we got together, we were creating sort of new band-zone-vibe sort of things.”
