Scarlett Johansson to releaseTom Waits covers album

It’s the news you haven’t been waiting forÃ¢â‚¬Â¦ Scarlett Johansson is set to release a debut album called Anywhere I Lay My Head. Just to up the “huh?” stakes, the record includes ten Tom Waits covers and just one original song.

The sessions took place at Louisiana’s Dockside Studios, with TV On The Radio producer David Sitek behind the boards. Yeah Yeah Yeahs axe man Nick Zinner is also said to have collaborated on the album.

Anywhere I Lay My Head is out in the US on 20 May, but no Australian release date is yet available. WaitÃ¢â‚¬Â¦did someone say ten Tom Waits covers!?

Cred for picking Tom Waits, but in my mind the combination is just bizzare. Maybe she's going to take up smoking cigars to try and make her voice huskier?

I read that this was happening in the new Tom Waits bio.
It's fucking unbelievable to me. I don't know how she could rate herself enough to take on covering someone with the monolithic stature of Tom.

Good luck to her and I'll be interested to hear the result but it's a big move.

This ain't as bad as it was on first listen. It's all very growning ScarJo does TV on Radio, but with the exception of I Don't Wanna Grow Up it's more than just an odd celebrity effort. The comment that it's Tinkerbell on cough syrup is spot on. Wish she'd done Christmas Card From a Hooker though...

I just can't imagine what she was thinking. I'm glad she's a fan. Kudos to her for that. But why a tribute album? To bring mainstream attention to a brilliant artist with an otherwise niche market, perhaps? I just can't see the sort of person who buys an album simply because she recorded it, then listening to Heart Attack and Vine and thinking, Wow! A drunken man growling songs about drugs, hookers, gambling and murder! This will be perfect for my next martinis-and-makeovers party!

well, i'm a fan of hers and i don't actually know any Tom Waits songs. i'm interested in hearing it, if i can be bothered looking it up and her voice sounds alright i might buy it. but i don't have martini and makeover parties...

I have ordered it for my library so I will pass judgement in the next week or so when it turns up.

If I had some more cash and time I would fly over to the US for the upcoming Glitter and Doom tour.

I'm actually enjoying this album a lot. The spirit of Wait's songs is still there, but Scarlett is a lot easier to listen to (and look at). And then there's David Bowie on two of the top tracks.

i like it, its different, in that couldnt listen to it every day type of way, however her cover of summertime was much better

Vocally it is a little disappointing having heard her sing other things, like Summertime. But with that said I can't really imagine it being done any other way. I do prefer the live versions from AOL Sessions over the studio tracks, though.

yeh after hearing summertime I thought the album was going to be much better, but i suppose if she did a popy album like hillary duff or paris hilton she would recieve much more criticism. at least with tom waits was something no one was really expecting
