Following Radiohead’s much-publicised exodus from EMI, Coldplay are also rumoured to be deserting the label.
According to The Daily Star tabloid, Chris Martin and his melancholy men could make forthcoming record Prospekt their last new material for EMI. Their five-album deal will be completed with a Best Of collection in 2009.
An unnamed source told the Daily Star, “There’s so much uncertainty in the record industry right now. The boys don’t necessarily need a label anymore.
“They aren’t even considering putting pen to paper on any type of new contract until they see what happens.”
Fellow EMI escapee Sir Paul McCartney once called Coldplay “part of the furniture” at the record company. They’ve been lucrative furniture, too, raking in millions from their three previous releases.
The former Beatle cited EMI’s outdated approach to digital music as a deciding factor in giving them the flick.
