Britpop heroes The Verve played their first gig in nine years in Glasgow last night, playing a set packed with classics as well as unveiling a new track.
The Verve, who split at the height of their success after touring 1997 album Urban Hymns, played to a packed crowd at the Glasgow Academy on the first night of a six-date UK tour. Singles This is Music, The Drugs Don’t Work, Sonnet and Bittersweet Symphony got an airing, while the band played new track Sit and Wonder for the first time.
It was the first time guitarist Nick McCabe had played with vocalist Richard Ashcroft, bassist Simon Jones and drummer Pete Salisbury since leaving the band in 1998. The band will continue with a second tour, taking in arenas aroun the UK in December.
While details of a follow-up to Urban Hymns remain unclear, NME aired the fruits of a recent jam on its website last month. Guitarist Simon Tong, who joined the band for Urban Hymns, is working with Damon Albarn and Paul Simonon in The Good, the Bad and the Queen and has not played a part in the reunion.
