Opera loses its biggest star
Thu 6th Sep, 2007 in International News
He was larger than life and was one of the men responsible for taking opera into the mainstream. Luciano Pavarotti, opera’s biggest star, has passed away at age 71.
Pavarotti, whose long and illustrious career included the world record for curtain calls (165), a collaboration with U2 and Brian Eno, topping the charts with The Three Tenors and the official anthem for the 1990 World Cup (no, it wasn’t World in Motion ), died at his home in Modena earlier today.
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006, shortly after his performance at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony – a performance that turned out to be his last.
