Frances Bean Cobain slams LanaDel Rey for romanticising thedeath of young musicians

UPDATE: June 24

Lana Del Rey has responded to Frances Bean’s criticism. “It’s all good, Del Rey tweeted at Cobain. ”[The journalist] was asking me a lot a out your dad I said I liked him because he was talented not because he died young. The other half of what I said wasn’t really related to the people he mentioned I don’t find that part of music glam either.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

Kurt Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean has warned Lana Del Rey not to romanticise the “death of young musicians” following comments the singer reportedly made during an interview to promote her new record Ultraviolence.

“I’ll never know my father because he died young,” Cobain tweeted at Del Rey. “It becomes a desirable feat because ppl like u think it’s ‘cool’ Well, it’s fucking not. Embrace life, because u only get one life. The ppl u mentioned wasted that life. Don’t be 1 of those ppl ur too talented to waste it away.” Cobain followed her comments by noting that she is not attacking Del Rey, but simply “trying to put things in perspective from personal experience”.

Del Rey has already distanced herself from the quotes published in The Guardian – including the comment “I wish I was dead already” – which provoked the response from Cobain. In a series of tweets that have since been deleted, Del Rey claimed that The Guardian’s Tim Jonze had been motivated by “sinister ambitions”.

In response, Jonze released the audio of the interview (listen below) and defended his line of questioning. “It’s not pleasant asking a pop star if she thinks the idea of dying young herself is attractive – it’s a dark question, but it’s not a leading one,” Jonze argues. “She has every opportunity to say no. And she can hardly complain about the subject matter: she’d been talking about her icons all dying young, she named her debut album Born to Die and had spent much of the 50 minutes previous to this point telling me how miserable she was.”
