Childish Gambino announcesSplendour sideshow

Childish Gambino was a late addition to the lineup for Splendour in the Grass – where he’ll play alongside Outkast, Interpol and Kelis on the opening day of the festival – and now he has confirmed his own sideshow in Sydney.

Put Donald Glover’s name into the Wu-Tang Name generator and you transform the comedian and star of Community into Childish Gambino. Put Childish Gambino on stage and you get a set of sharp wordplay, pop-culture references and indie samples from Grizzly Bear, Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective, Sleigh Bells, and Vampire Weekend. The actor/rapper made his major label debut in 2011 with Camp and followed it up with Because The Internet late last year. His second album features guest spots from Azealia Banks and Chance The Rapper as well as production from Thundercat and Ludwig Goransson (who composes all of the music for Community).

All good, makes his Splendour show all the more exclusive. Shame it means he won't maybe make an appearance at Danny Brown's Splendour gig though.

Can we expect an hour and a half set at Splendour for Gambino?

I love Gambino. He's amazing live too. But I'm really struggling to enjoy much about Because The Internet.

Yeah Gambino is defs backpacker approved.

MorningAfterboy

MorningAfterboy said on the 8th May, 2014

That's really weird to me. Isn't he too mainstream/uncool? Or is he liked ironically or something?

RAMONESelaar

RAMONESelaar said on the 8th May, 2014

Nah backpackers are more the fans who look down on the drugs/cash/bitches hiphop. Gambino's closer to the conscious rap that they like. LQL can probs explain it better.

loudQUIETloud

loudQUIETloud said on the 9th May, 2014

Yeah that's pretty much it. Most backpackers are also edgy white teenagers so Gambino's nerdy references and edgy punchlines (Casey Anthony, Virginia Tech etc.) appeal to them.

Knowing my luck, they'll either just add more tickets to the show I can't go to OR announce a show on the Monday that I can't go to.

No sideshow at the Hordern that night so I reckon they could just be moving it there. Not sure which venue I hate more.

empireship

empireship said on the 20th May, 2014

The Big Top is a shittier venue. Hordern isn't *too* bad.
