Nirvana drummer dumped fromHall Of Fame via brutal SMS

Chad Channing joined Nirvana in 1988. He played on their first single ‘Love Buzz’ and recorded all songs except three on their Sub Pop debut album Bleach. Citing artistic and creative differences, Channing left the band and formed another outfit called Fire Ants with a couple members of Mother Love Bone. His replacement: Some guy called Dave Grohl.

Channing wasn’t Nirvana’s first drummer – he was preceded by Aaron Burckhard, Dale Crover and Dave Foster – but who could forget those gated, slightly sloppy drums on ‘About A Girl’ or ‘Negative Creep’? And yet it’s not enough to secure Channing’s placement next month in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Instead the band’s best known lineup will be inducted – Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and whoever walks up to the podium for the late Kurt Cobain. Channing’s omission isn’t entirely unexpected, but it’s the manner in which he found out that’s pretty sad. Here’s a reenactment of the exact text message sent to Nirvana’s manager from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:

What makes this story even worse is a Radio.com interview with Channing in the lead-up to the Hall of Fame induction, in which he talks about the prospect of making his daughter proud. “I’ll be there at the table ready to walk up,” he said, obviously well before receiving the text. “When I told my daughter about the induction, she was super excited for me! So much of my excitement about it is for her!”

Nirvana made the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in their first year of eligibility, with ‘Love Buzz’ falling just within the 25-year cut-off. Other inductees this year include the original line-up of KISS (who themselves are miffed that long-time members Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer are not getting the nod), Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Linda Ronstadt and Cat Stevens. The induction ceremony will take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 10.

Chad should of written back that although he is disappointed by the news, at least doesn't have a name as bland as John Smith
