Vance Joy wasn't the mostpopular act in the Hottest 100

Vance Joy may have won the Hottest 100 with ‘Riptide’ but he wasn’t the most popular act with triple j listeners in 2013 – he wasn’t even in the top three.

Voting results published on triple j’s music director Richard Kingsmill’s blog reveal that Lorde, Arctic Monkeys and Daft Punk all received more votes than Vance Joy. “If you’ve released six great songs in one year, your chances of being #1 are probably less as the total votes may get split across lots of songs,” Kingsmill explains. “So we tallied up all the song votes and this is the list of the 40 most voted for acts for 2013’s Hottest 100.”

While his rivals for the top spot had several big hits that split their vote, Vance Joy only had two songs on the countdown – ‘Play With Fire’ made it in at #95. Arctic Monkeys had three songs – ‘Arabella’, ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?’ and ‘Do I Wanna Know? – in the top 20 while Hottest 100 runner-up Lorde had three songs – ‘Team’, ‘Tennis Court’ and ‘Royals’ – in the top 15. Daft Punk, who finished in third place with ‘Get Lucky’, had four songs in the top 100.

Other acts including London Grammar, Haim, Vampire Weekend, Chvrches, and Queens of the Stone Age also had their vote split across three Hottest 100 songs. Behind Vance Joy, the most popular local acts on the Australia Day countdown were Rufus, Flume and Chet Faker, Bliss N Eso, and Matt Corby.
