Tame Impala: Lonerism is“amateur hour” compared toour new album

Look out world: The next Tame Impala album will make Lonerism look like amateur hour.

This according to frontman Kevin Parker, who in a recent interview with The Vine says his growing confidence in the studio bodes well for album number three. In addition to self-producing and engineering the past two Tame Impala records – 2010’s Innerspeaker and 2012’s Lonerism – Parker also produced Melody’s Echo Chamber’s 2012 self-titled debut. And it’s this time spent behind the desk that makes Parker excited about the potential for album three.

“I’m super excited about it,” he told The Vine. “It’s so fresh in the process that I’m so into it. All I can think now is that it’ll make Lonerism look like amateur hour. From a sonic viewpoint anyway. Definitely. I’m just a lot better at creating sounds.”

With Tame Impala touring the world – they’ll be soon embarking on the Big Day Out tour – Parker says writing for the new record has been a bit more sporadic. “I get a flash of inspiration for something and it’s just completely different to what I was doing the day before, to the point where … if all these songs are going to go on the same album, I’m gonna have to work out a way to make them fit together that won’t just seem like a weird mixtape.”

He also opened up on the band’s Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, saying he had “no idea how successful that means you are”. The band, of course, won three ARIA Awards last month including Best Group, Best Rock Album and Album Of The Year.

Big Day Out kicks off this Sunday, January 19, on the Gold Coast.
