2014 Coachella lineupannounced

The internet’s worst kept secret is out: Outkast will officially reunite to headline Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2014.

They’re headlining day one of the festival, which takes place over two weekends (April 11-13 and April 18-20). Day two will be headlined by Muse, while day three will belong to Arcade Fire, who will be in the country imminently for the Big Day Out and sideshows. Other confirmed artists include Broken Bells, Haim, Pharrell Williams, Foster The People, Queens Of The Stone Age, Pet Shop Boys, Beck, Lana Del Rey, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Replacements and Chvrches.

Kiwi chart-topper and Laneway headliner Lorde has high billing on day two, above Nas, MGMT, Sleigh Bells and Fatboy Slim, while the Australian contingent features Preatures, Jagwar Ma, Empire Of The Sun and Flight Facilities.

Outkast’s performance at Coachella will be their first since they went on hiatus in 2007. Big Boi has since released two solo records Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty and Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, while Andre 3000 has been content to make movies, impersonate Jimi Hendrix and make occasional cameo appearances on Beyoncé, Frank Ocean and Drake tracks.

Coachella has of course hosted several memorable reunions, including Pixies, Rage Against The Machine, Pavement, Iggy and The Stooges, Jesus and Mary Chain, Portishead, Faith No More, My Bloody Valentine, Big Audio Dynamite, At-The Drive In, and Pulp.

amazing line-up but one must ask the question...Does Lorde really deserve to be ranked above Nas, MGMT, Fatboy Slim etc.

Braveheart81

Based on her 2013 album and single sales in the US, I think it's pretty understandable how highly she has been billed.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 9th Jan, 2014

I would argue Lorde will sell more tickets than Nas, so yeah, her slightly more visible place on that massive bill is warranted.

+ MGMT are nasty.

I see your point, but what could they possibly add to the poster. The poster is the news and it's all that matters.

No offense to our FL overlords, but I sure as fuck wouldn't have read an article and gone straight to the poster.

Some local perspective, maybe? There's already discussion in this thread about the Aus / NZ artists (Flume / Lorde), acts that are due a trip to Australia (The Knife), that kind of thing. The comments below the article *are*the story from an Australian point of view. It would be nice to have that kind of content *in* the article, rather than underneath it.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 9th Jan, 2014

Maybe there will be a follow up article in the future with some of those things?

When one of the biggest festivals in the world releases their lineup, I'd expect pretty much every music blog to post the lineup as soon as they can because otherwise they are missing out on traffic that will go to other sites instead.

LukeWarm

LukeWarm said on the 9th Jan, 2014

Also, of course this is the first 'official' confirmation (though admittedly it had already been widely reported) that Outkast - one of the most popular and influential acts of the last couple of decades - are reforming and playing live again. That's maybe worth a mention?

Well, yeah - that's kind of the point - in the thing I quoted, FL made a big thing of not just replicating the same content as every other music blog. And on every other site I've seen this lineup posted, they've actually bothered to type some words.

Small thing, obvs. But music journalism (and journalism everywhere) is increasingly about getting there first, getting clicks, all that stuff. I was heartened when FL announced their 'line in the sand' and their promise to offer a genuine alternative to that, and it's disappointing that since then, despite a lot of really great content on the site, they also keep falling back in to bad old habits.

I'll get over it though.

I think it is a combination of the two.

Without having the volume of readership (much of which comes from stuff like this), you a) can't afford to pay the staff who keep the website running and full of material and b) don't have unpaid journalists willing to write interesting and in depth articles that set the website apart from others.

To my understanding, festival lineup articles attract a huge amount more traffic than the feature pieces that someone has spent a long time researching and writing.

Also, from my perspective, I generally only look at this music site so I appreciate that it posts stuff like this otherwise I wouldn't easily see it.

Fair point - I'm totally realistic that bills need to be paid - and your point is absolutely true - these sorts of stories are the ones that attract enormous traffic, which helps support the other content. FL are very transparent about the number of views each item gets, and stories like this get many hits than, for example, the excellent Lorde 'headliner' article.

However, the content that I wanted to see - drawing attention to the significance of Outkast's return, and also the Aus/NZ perspective - is exactly what eventually appeared, which,

a) Sort of vindicates my point about the need for a short supporting article, other than the lineup poster,
b) kind of makes me look stupid for jumping the gun and being critical of FL (though, equally, I still thnk FL should have held off for an extra half hour before posting... or at least posted the lineup with the words 'article to follow' - but that's quibbling really)

i think greyhound does buses from la (cbd). there is an airport in palm springs which is about 20-25 mins from the polo fields but not sure of the frequency of flights.

we have driven down every year on the thursday afternoon/early evening. the drive down takes anywhere from 3 hours plus and its a pretty nice drive down (not so ont the monday morning heading back though!). just make sure you leave early enough the avoid the peak hour traffic out of la and for the search once you get to the camping grounds. there is generally a pre-party on the thursday night so there is enough going on if you arrive earlier in the day. oh and there is also a hertz in palm springs if you want to drive one of the legs and make other arrangements for the other.

not completely overwhelmed with the headliners (outkast aside), but there is acts that i'm super keep to see that will keep me occupied during the day.

empireship

empireship said on the 22nd Jan, 2014

thx for the tips. we ended up booking a hotel/vip ticket package in palm springs (which includes a daily shuttle transfer to/from the grounds) so all we have to figure out is how to do la -> palm springs and back. i'd rather hop on a greyhound bus and not have to worry about driving or anything so i might start doing some research down that path :) fly in apr 9th, fly out apr 14th. whirlwind trip! (lol jks i just can't afford to stay there more than 5 days).

I haven't hired a car in the USA since 2005, but there are generally one way hire surcharges (it was $99 when I picked up car in LA and dropped it off in San Fran).

If you did two one way hires, it probably wouldn't be much cheaper than just renting the car for 5 days.

If you want to keep the costs down I'd try and find other people wanting lifts to and from Coachella.

empireship

empireship said on the 22nd Jan, 2014

ends up being about $85AUD each way, so $170 all up. no one-way surcharges have been applied at the checkout stage - do you think they'll try put some hidden surcharges on when we pick the car up??

gumbuoy

Matt's voice was not so good at that show, soI think he cchose not to play songs that strain his voice too much like Supermassive Black Hole or Supremacy.
Although they were originally going to play Muscle Museum instead of Yes Please but dropped it at the last min.
