Voting opens for the 2014triple j Hottest 100

Voting for the triple j’s Hottest 100 – aka the “world’s biggest music democracy” – has officially opened.

That’s right, you can now play your part in ensuring that Lorde’s ‘Royals’ or Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ romps it in when the votes are revealed on Australia Day (January 26). Simply select up to 10 of your favourite songs of 2013 from the voting list – just make sure you do it all in one sitting. Voting opens from today until midday on January 20.

As an incentive to cast your vote, triple j are giving voters the chance to win a double pass to every triple j-presented festival and gig in 2014, including Laneway Festival, Splendour In The Grass, Groovin The Moo, Falls Festival, The National, Phoenix and Arctic Monkeys. Click here to cast your vote.

WHY WE STILL CARE ABOUT THE HOTTEST 100

This year’s countdown was the biggest yet, with 187,975 voters casting 1,516,765 votes. The winner, as expected, was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with ‘Thrift Shop’, ahead of Of Monsters & Men (‘Little Talks’), Alt-J (‘Breezeblocks’), Flume (‘Holdin On’) and Mumford & Sons (‘I Will Wait’). Click here for the complete 2013 Hottest 100. Other recent winners have included Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ (2011), Angus & Julia Stone’s ‘Big Jet Plane’ (2010) and Mumford & Sons ‘Little Lion Man’ (2009).

Check out the behind-the-scenes footage of Lewis McKirdy’s Hottest 100 video, featuring terrible acting and star-studded cameos by Lorde, Nile Rodgers, San Cisco, Architecture In Helsinki, Kings Of Leon, Franz Ferdinand and Flight Facilities.

Going to be breaking my 'no two songs by the same band' rule this year.

Violent Soho - In The Aisle
Violent Soho - Covered In Chrome
Cold War Kids - Miracle Mile
The Drones - I See Seaweed
The Drones - A Moat You Can Stand In
QOTSA - My God Is The Sun
Frightened Rabbit - The Woodpile

might swap one of those last two out for SFK's Sweet Nothing cover, even though I liked the full band rock version they played at Splendour more than the JJJ Like A Version version.

Wasn't that last year?

gumbuoy

It was released as a single last year, but I didn't think it got any JJJ or Aus radio play at all until this year...

In any case, I'm assuming it'll be on the shortlist, which I haven't checked, and if it is, I'll vote for it, otherwise will vote for Harper Lee.

Lorde- Royals
The Smith Street Band- Ducks Fly Together

I really want to add in Cold War Kids- Miracle Mile, so I might swap it with Chvrches. Still deciding though.
There weren't any Tegan and Sara songs in the Triple J shortlist, but Heartthrob was released this year. I can't remember if Closer was released last year, but I don't believe it was included in/eligible for the 2012 Hottest 100?

They mean something different, but if someone said something like "racist towards blacks" I'd take that to mean the same as "racist against blacks". In other words, I can understand saying "predisposition towards" instead of "against".

gumbuoy

gumbuoy said on the 22nd Dec, 2013

As a word, 'predisposition' doesn't have the same effect as 'racist' though. Racist indicates a position (against), while predisposition only means that you've determined your position in advance.

of course not, and thats a lie, she was the first woman in 17 to top the alternative chart, which makes a huge difference. more so suggesting that there is much less alternative music in circulation featuring females than there are featuring males and the fact that lorde is the first woman in 17 years to top the alternative chart is less as a result of any predisposition towards or against women in music and more a result of underrepresentation

loudQUIETloud

Lorde was the first female to top the Billboard Alternative Chart in 17 years, the main Billboard Chart is topped pretty regularly by female artists. The fact that women so rarely top the Billboard Alternative Chart coupled with female artists poor showings in Hottest 100s definitely shows that there's a bias against women in the eyes of alternative music listeners though.

Had to decide which JJJ thread to post this in, but I noticed there's no function this year to auto-post your vote to Facebook or Twitter. I guess they weren't too impressed with the Warmest 100 from last year, and figured if they didn't provide the function, fewer people are going to post their list, and it'll be harder to track even if they do.

Victim

Victim said on the 19th Jan, 2014

I think it's pretty pathetic they couldn't come up with something in a year to prevent that. Even if they just had the app on Facebook to share your votes like they used to have prior to last year, that wouldn't cause the problems they had last year, as that came from the number sequence in the vote links from memory.

Every year they like to claim there's more votes than ever, which I'm sure they'll do again this year, but with few people sharing votes which would remind some more casual ones to vote, I imagine the votes would be down.
