5 Bands You Need To Hear:November

A former member of Yves Klein Blue, an African blues artist from Castlemaine and a brother and sister duo harnessing the “Lorde touch” – SARAH SMITH uncovers five bands you need to listen to this month.

MT

Since splitting from his former band Yves Klein Blue and relocating to London in 2011 frontman Michael Tomlinson has kept a fairly low profile. But finally he has returned to the limelight with new group MT, and my how he has grown (and we’re not just talking about his hair!) New single ‘Alpha Romeo’ packs a most satisfying punch, swinging wildly between up-beat piano pop and Strokes-y party tune. The melody is infectious and Tomlinson’s wry lyrics (“I’m tired of lying when people ask me if I’m alright/ ‘Cause I am the only one, hey I’m the baddest motherfucker”) keep the whole thing from feeling too cheesy. Yves Klein who?

D.D. Dumbo

D.D. Dumbo may hail from a small town in regional Victoria best known for its gold fields and delicious candy, but his songs sound like they’ve crawled from within the murkiest depths of the Delta. He describes his music as earthy blues that references “African dessert, Tanzanian ilimba and transcendental Tuvan melody”, and that pretty well sums it up. What makes it all the more exciting is that it also sounds like nothing else being made in Australia right now. New single ‘Tropical Oceans’ is taken from his forthcoming EP, due for release via UK label The Blue Rider on November 12.

Glass Animals

Glass Animals is a UK four-piece, lead by 23-year-old vocalist/songwriter David Bayley, who previously spent his time experimenting with organic and digital sounds in “an isolated, home-built studio deep in the forests of Oxfordshire”. But don’t let that put you off. Recently the band emerged from the woods to be nabbed by Wolf Tone – the new label of super producer Paul Epworth (Florence + The Machine, Friendly Fires, Foster The People). Their first collaboration with Epworth is ‘Pyslla’ a kind of Radiohead-esq cut of soulful dub, and hopefully a good indication of what we can expect from their debut full-length next year.

Broods

New Zealand brother-sister duo Broods (aka Georgia and Caleb Nott) are not only really, really ridiculously good looking they can also write really good tunes. New single ‘Bridges’ is a tight piece of on-trend downbeat electronica. And speaking of on-trend, the track was produced by fellow Kiwi Joel Little aka the guy that produced ‘Royals’ by Lorde. No pressure.

The Ninjas

If you like your music “rock” then you’ll love The Ninjas. Straight out of Brisbane the duo – singer Josh Stewart and guitarist Pat Ferris – make sleazy, simple rock ‘n’ roll with big riffs and super catchy choruses. It’s a little bit 2004, but it works.
