Big Day Out cancels secondSydney show

The Sydney Big Day Out show scheduled for Monday, January 27 has been merged into the show on Australia Day – Sunday, January 26.

“Perhaps we were a bit ambitious expanding to two dates in Sydney for this year’s Big Day Out,” says promoter Ken West in a statement issued this morning.

Fans who had purchased tickets for the second show have three options. You can use your January 27 ticket for the January 26 festival (the ticket is now automatically valid for the festival on Australia Day); you can get a full refund until October 30; or you can exchange the ticket for any of the other Big Day Out dates scheduled for the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth.

The festival has announced a lineup of 32 acts, but West told FL that the final list is “closer to something like 45 acts.” However, with the festival already boasting three genuine headliners – Pearl Jam, Blur and Arcade Fire – the festival boss warned fans not to expect any “massive” acts on the second announcement. Organisers of the Big Day Out have also promised “no clashes” for their five mainstage headliners – Major Lazer, Snoop Dogg, Arcade Fire, Pearl Jam and Blur.

“If you’re not going to go to the show on this lineup then a small breaking band isn’t going to change your mood,” West explained. “So we’re holding off on the 50 acts that are pushing and saying ‘choose me!’ … We’ve really only got a finite number of spots left and a lot of things will happen over the next three months musically. If you shut your booking process seven months out then everything beyond that is excluded. If we’re going to be serious curators of an event, especially on the fresher stuff.”

That's a shame. On the plus side, this could mean it's more likely there will be an Arcade Fire sideshow in Sydney.

The Venues for Adelaide and Perth are still to be confirmed? More like the days themselves are still to be confirmed dependant on ticket sales - which at this stage are much lower than anticipated given the headliner announcements>

Future Music Festival announced yesterday it was taking the BDO's location at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds - whilst the BDO is supposedly moving to the dustbowl of Bonython Park (stupid stupid move)
