Listen to a new Pixies song, minus Kim Deal

Kim Deal, bass player and co-vocalist of the Pixies, officially left the band again just over two weeks ago. The rest of the group have quickly recovered and released their first new song since 2004. ‘Bagboy’ features original members Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering as well as new bass player Jeremy Dubs. Dubs also presumably contributes the high-pitched backing vocal, which sounds rather a lot like Deal’s voice. Dubs was formerly a member of the Bunnies, who played several support slots for the Pixies when they reunited in 2004, and fronts the band Speak!

At two seconds shy of five minutes, ‘Bagboy’ is long by Pixies standards – their last original song, ‘Bam Thwok’, came in at a more typical two-and-a-half minutes. ‘Bagboy’ was recorded with their preferred producer Gil Norton back in October, when Deal was presumably still a member of the band, although her reluctance to work on a new album with them is what held them back according to Black Francis. The Pixies’ frontman previously said in an interview with The Gothamist, “While I may have tried to convince her otherwise, maybe she’s got a point… She doesn’t need a new Pixies record, so maybe there doesn’t need to be one.”

Deal is currently on tour with the band she formed after leaving the Pixies the first time, The Breeders, who are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album Last Splash. They’re due to reach Australia this October to play the album in full at All Tomorrow’s Parties “Release the Bats” and a selection of sideshows.

Armed with "Bagboy," the band's first new song in nine years, the Pixies will launch the first leg of what will be a massive global tour on Sunday, September 29 in Paris, France. This will kick off the first tour the Pixies have done in nearly two years, and will give them an opportunity to do something they haven't been able to do in two decades : premiere brand new Pixies songs, the first collection of new material since 1991's Trompe le Monde.

"Along with everyone's favorites, we'll be playing songs that we haven't played in ages or never played live before," said Black Francis. "Songs like 'Brick is Red,' 'Havalina,' 'Tony's Theme.' and 'Sad Punk.' We've probably rehearsed some 80 songs, so we'll be able to change up the set at the last minute if we feel like it. We're all really looking forward to this tour."

Yes! Looks like another Australian tour will be in the works then.

They announced that as well. Left it out.

Kim Shattuck will be playing bass guitar / backing vocals on the upcoming tour announced today. You may know Kim from LA band The Muffs and previously from The Pandoras.

KD impression on Bagboy, replacing her with another Kim.

Fuck, they really don't know how to let go.

So I guess the metamorphosis is now complete and Frank Black is literally Billy Corgan?

Nah, has to kick the other two out of the band yet.

I was more getting at the whole "Billy kicks his female bassist and Asian-American co-guitarist out and replaces them with another female bassist and Asian-American co-guitarist" thing being similar to Pixies' "female bassist named Kim leaves and is replaced by another female bassist named Kim" thing, but that's also true.

I rather liked it. I'm never seeing them live again tho. Frank's voice is shot.

This is like when my parents got divorced and my Dad remarried someone with the same first name as my Mum.

I don't mind the song but need a few more listens. Would have to think twice about seeing them live again.
