Rilo Kiley’s next record notso new

It’s been a bad year for bands breaking up, as this rollcall of the dead shows. When it seemed like there was a possibility one band, LA indie rockers Rilo Kiley, might be getting back together their fans were eager to believe it. This week, the band wrote this post on their Facebook: “Record is almost finished, and artwork is nearly done. Going to need your help! More to come”. Followers in the comments interpreted that as a sign of life for the band, who released their last album, Under the Blacklight, in 2007.

But when Rilo Kiley’s drummer Jason Boesel (who has also released a solo album, and been part of Conor Oberst projects Bright Eyes and the Mystic Valley Band) announced the band’s hiatus in an interview with Paste in 2010, he also explained that their next release would be a two-disc collection of leftovers. “Rilo Kiley’s working on a compilation of all the songs we never got to put on records over the years,” he said. “A lot of them are some of my favorite Rilo Kiley songs, so that should actually be a pretty strong release. There’s no plan to make a new record right now, since we’re on a hiatus of sorts, but I hope we do at some point. It’s been fun hanging out with everyone and putting the compilation together.”

It’s been two years in the making, but that’s what the next Rilo Kiley album will be. They’ve been digging through the archives for photos documenting their career to accompany it, and perhaps that’s what “Going to need your help!” refers to.

Rilo Kiley formed in 1998 as a four-piece fronted by Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett, both of whom had been child stars – she starred in The Wizard, he had a role on Boy Meets World. They released their first album, Take Offs and Landings on Barsuk Records in 2001 and went on to put out each of their albums on a different label, The Execution of All Things via Saddle Creek Records and More Adventurous on their own label, Brute Records. After that album’s success, they were signed by Warner Bros. for Under the Blacklight. Although a full explanation for their subsequent hiatus hasn’t been given, Sennett expressed disappointment at their last album and has formed a new band with Boesel called The Elected, while Lewis has enjoyed a successful solo career alongside Rilo Kiley since the release of Rabbit Fur Coat in 2006.
