Official word on the new album may still be in the area of zilch, but that doesn’t mean Daft Punk are laying low. When Paris Fashion Week kicked off at the beginning of the month, the iconic Frenchmen made their own contribution to proceedings, soundtracking Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2013 runway show with a 15-minute custom mix.

The pair got the call in to provide the mix from designer Hedi Slimane (a big deal if you’re into that kind of thing), editing and looping songs from juke joint owner and Fat Possum blues artist Junior Kimbrough for the show – the official byline is “Junior Kimbrough Edited by Daft Punk”. Kimbrough died in 1998 but his music has been reworked by several famous musicians since, most notably on the 2005 tribute album Sunday Nights: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough which featured covers by Iggy & The Stooges, The Black Keys, Spiritualized, Cat Power, Mark Lanegan and others.

The fashion show went down a few weeks back, but the mix has now made its way to the internet for an airing outside the realm of the Gallic fashion elite – listen below with Soundcloud, or to hear a nine-minute segment of the mix complete with high fashion, head to YouTube.

Rumours about Daft Punk’s first album since 2005’s Human After All have flared up again this year with Chic frontman Nile Rodgers telling FL that he’d been working with the pair on a new record. “We were just jamming at my house, but it’s gonna be proper and real. They came over to my today around breakfast time and it’s now evening I basically had to almost kick them out,” Rodgers revealed. “We were having so much fun just in an informal setting that we decided to make it formal. And it’s very formal. It’s gonna be amazing.”

While the status of the long-awaited fourth album may still be shrouded in mystery, FL’s sister site inthemix recently delved into the story behind Daft Punk’s first Australian tour back in 1998.
