Stop crying: Bon Iver’s notbreaking up

Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver, aka Grammy winner Bonnie Bear) has caused widespread blogster panic after telling Minnesota radio station 89.3 The Current that he was “winding down” the band.

The news (probably) prompted many Bon Iver fans to move to snowbound log cabins to write albums about the heartbreaking loss, but the band’s label, Jagjaguwar, has called them back to civilisation by explaining that Bon Iver is not breaking up; “just going off cycle after two very busy years”.

Vernon says that right now he’s on the tail end of touring Bon Iver, Bon Iver and is looking forward to working on more collaborations with Emmylou Harris, Blind Boys of Alabama and Bonnie Raitt. “I look at it like a faucet,” he told The Current. “I have to turn it off and walk away from it because so much of how that music comes together is subconscious or discovering. There’s so much attention on the band, it can be distracting at times. I really feel the need to walk away from it while I still care about it. And then if I come back to it — if at all — I’ll feel better about it and be renewed or something to do that.”

So stop crying about Bon Iver breaking up, go put your Bon Iver records back on and get back to crying. In yet more weepy news, Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago is among the entries in FL’s Most Overrated Albums of All-Time list.
