Rock biopic news: CBGB's, TheBand, Hendrix

It seems like ages since we’ve had a great rock biopic take to the silver screen. That’s set to change in the not-too-distant future, with three promising new rock flicks given the green light – and, naturally, there’s already been some big names attached to them.

Up first is a film about legendary rock venue CBGB’s in Manhattan, centring around its rise to prominence in the 70s. Alan Rickman was already linked to the project to play the venue’s founder Hilly Kristal, who tragically passed only a year after the venue shut down in 2006. Now, reports have emerged for three new names to appear in the movie: Rickman’s Harry Potter castmate Rupert Grint as Cheetah Chrome, the guitarist for Cleveland punks The Dead Boys; Rock of Ages star Malin Akerman, who will take on the role of Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry; and Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters as Iggy Pop. The film, written by Randall Miller and Jody Savin, is set to start filming next month.

Elsewhere, Twilight heart-throb Robert Pattinson has revealed not only plans for a film based around The Band, but that he is set to star in it. In an interview with French magazine Les Inrockuptibles, the British actor responded to a question regarding what he was working on: “I’m going to do a movie about The Band, the one that played with Dylan: a beautiful script about the nature of songwriting”. No further details are yet known, but let’s hope that Pattinson’s knowledge of the folk-rockers extends past knowing that they’re “the one that played with Dylan.”

Additionally, MTV has reported that Outkast rapper Andre 3000 has finally begun work on a Jimi Hendrix biopic entitled All is By My Side after years of rumours and reported development hell. Production and filming is currently happening in Ireland, with director John Ridley at the helm. Given that it was Dre himself that passionately campaigned for the film to happen, it will only be a matter of time to find if he can stand next to this cinematic fire.

He'll need to add on 2700 before he's up to scratch.
