Kanye West’s new film 'CruelSummer'

Kanye West’s latest movie project, the experimental 30-minute film Cruel Summer, has débuted at the Cannes Film Festival inside a white pyramid with seven huge screens five in a 180-degree panorama, one on the ceiling, and one on the floor.

The film shot in Qatar stars Kid Cudi as the son of a high end car thief who falls for a blind Arabian princess played by Sarah A who magically able to see when a remix of a song by Coldplay plays. According to The Guardian the film also features “a sparkly purple door into the middle of the desert”, “a giant guitar string” and a hawk flying in “ultra, slow, motion”. GQ’s review notes that “a masked Kanye and Kid Cudi engage in a Tarantino-style pop-culture debate… “Who do you like better, Prince or Michael Jordan?” Cudi replies, “That doesn’t even make sense man—that’s like asking, ‘Cake or Steak?’”

However, as Steven Zeitchik from the LA Times film blog 24 Frames notes “The story is secondary to the pyrotechnics, with new music from West and a thumping surround-sound quality that makes a 3-D Michael Bay effort feel like an iPad short.” Songs on the film’s soundtrack include West’s recent single Mercy and a remix of Salem’s I’m Still in the Night and material from Cudi, Pusha T and Big Sean.

Kanye explained that the idea for the multiple screen presentation “related to a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era, where we’re always on our BlackBerry in a ball game or at the movies. I was very particular about having the screens separate, where your mind puts the screens back together, the way you put memories together… it feels more like the experience of life.”

He admitted that he’s “not the best director in the world” and outlined some of his other ambitions: “I want to work on cities, I want to work on amusement parks, I want to change entertainment experiences or life. Something like if McQueen or Tarsem [Singh] was to meet the entertainment value of a Cirque du Soleil or a Walt Disney. With the Donda company, this is our first installation.”

According to a press release, West plans to re-edit and polish the film before reconstruct it in “key locations around the globe.” Hopefully one of those “key locations” is in Australia. It’s not too far fetched to expect him to visit us; after all he did jet into Sydney to a few days back in 2010 just to premiere the Runaway film.

I never really thought much of his rhyming on Clipse material. But ever since MBDTF I started paying more attention to him (and considering him a decent rapper and lyricist).

What's everybody's opinion on Big Sean and 2Chainz? Obviously two of the lesser known members of G.O.O.D Music crew, but I really don't rate either of them particularly much. I love them on Mercy, but their solo stuff leaves alot to be desired imo.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 5th Sep, 2012

Yeah I'm not really loving them. Particularly 2Chainz.

Needs more Pusha T

Birthday Song with 2 Chainz is a disaster.

just had a browse through www.kanyewest.com and noticed a few songs i hadn't seen before namely Exodus 23:1 by Pusha T and I Don't Like with Kanye, Pusha T, Jadakiss and Big Sean. which means we now have about 5 songs from Cruel Summer.

what do we think of this method of releasing music. would you rather hear a bulk of an album for the first time in one go or is this drip feed slash self leaking method more interesting?

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 5th Sep, 2012

yeah just noticed the tracklisting. Pusha T is on almost as many tracks as Kanye himself. but where is Mos Def?

Jaaaaaccckk

Jaaaaaccckk said on the 5th Sep, 2012

I read somewhere that tracklist is wrong/outdated and this is apparently the real one.

1. No Intentions (Intro feat Kanye West, Big Sean & Cyhi the Prince)

2. Mercy (Big Sean, Pusha T, Kanye West & 2 Chainz)

3. Extra Large (feat Kid Cudi, Yasiin Bey & Hit-Boy)

4. Torture (feat. Teyana Taylor, Common & D'Banj)

5. Turbulence (feat. Kanye West, Kid Cudi & Mr. Hudson)

6. Cruel Summer (feat Kanye West, Common & John Legend)

7. Middle East (feat. Big Sean, Cyhi The Prince and Teyana Taylor)

8. The One (feat. Kanye West & Marsha Ambrosius)

9. Power House (feat. Common, Kid Cudi & 2 Chainz)

10. New God Flow (feat Pusha T. & Kanye West)

11. Benedict Z (feat. Malik Yusef)

12. Volkish (feat Kanye West, Big Sean & Frank Ocean)

13. Perfect Bitch (feat. Kanye West)

14. Hotel Room (feat Big Sean, Pusha T & Common)

15. Rockstar Life (feat Kanye West, John Legend & Jay Electronica)

16. Hall of Fame (ft. Big Sean, Pusha T & Kid Cudi)

17. Cruise (feat Yasom Bey & Q-tip)

18. Round of Applause (feat GOOD MUSIC)

Given that the album was supposedly pushed back for some Mos Def features, this seems to make more sense. I could've also just read a lot of bullshit.

tyler07

tyler07 said on the 5th Sep, 2012

That makes more sense considering it features Common, who was awesome on the video footage of GOOD music at MIA fest.

None of Kanye's G.O.O.D music stuff compares to Can't Tell Me Nothing

sarcasm_mister

sarcasm_mister said on the 6th Sep, 2012

why would he waste his best material on a compilation? better off keeping it for his own stuff.

as much as i love Kanye i think he needs to slow down a little. his output over the past 8 years has been phenomenal but i can sense a certain degree of mediocrity slipping into his work.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 6th Sep, 2012

Oh I totally understand that and agree.

I think Kanye has always stepped up when surrounded by those who are arguably better than him. It's so far the only Yeezy stuff I've loved from the compilation has been when he's on his own or with someone good like Pusha T.

You can tell when he's on track with a loser like Big Sean or 2Chainz that he isn't trying to look good because he doesn't have to.

To me Kanye always produces his best stuff when he has something to prove.

sarcasm_mister

sarcasm_mister said on the 6th Sep, 2012

just finished watching the Made in America set and Big Sean was a disaster. really don't get what Kanye sees in him. at least 2 Chainz kinda brings that obligatory Lil Jon type personality that each of these labels seem to have one of.

and could someone explain to me the whole Mos Def story. the compilation was pushed back because of him right? but he's no where to be seen on the tracklistings?

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 6th Sep, 2012

Apparently that isn't the confirmed track list.

Yeah 2Chainz is stupid party rap. Big Sean is just a waste.

Niggas in Paris slays.

tyler07

tyler07 said on the 6th Sep, 2012

I agree with all above points. Big Sean is very, very average and I find his voice irritating. 2 Chainz really doesn't rank with any of these other musicians at all, and it's frustrating because I think his verse on Mercy is really good and shows alot of potential but nothing else he's done even comes close.

I'm sure I will enjoy this album alot, but I'm not sure whether it will achieve its desired aim. I imagine the aim of this project was to showcase the talents of all the different musicians on the label as being top shelf stuff, however I'm starting to wonder whether it's just going to be King Yeezy at the top with Common and Pusha outclassing everybody else on the project.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 6th Sep, 2012

this.

It's not even that he is bad. He is just so uninteresting it's offensive. At least I remember how shit 2Chainz is.
