RIP Donald “Duck” Dunn

Donald “Duck” Dunn, the bassist at Stax Records in the 1960s and member of the legendary Booker T. and the MGs has died aged 70 while on tour in Tokyo.

Fellow member of the MGs Steve Cropper made the announcement of Facebook posting “Today I lost my best friend, the World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live. Duck Dunn died in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club.”

Dunn played on Stax classics including Otis Redding’s Respect and Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, Sam and Dave’s Hold On, I’m Coming and Wilson Pickett’s In the Midnight Hour. He also played with Levon Helm, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Guy Sebastian. With Cropper, Dunn also played in Dan Aykroyd and John’s Belushi’s Blues Brothers band and appeared in the 1980 Blues Brothers movie.

Dunn received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2007 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
