Girls “f#cked” by Girls

Girls lead singer Christopher Owens has given headline writers looking for a cheap joke an amazing gift by launching an attack on the new HBO series Girls.

In a series of tweets Owens complained that “It’s a bit sucky to be informed by a giant company like HBO that you don’t matter enough culturally to not have your name taken away or used. Do you think that TV show even thought twice before using our bands name for their show? I’ll bet they were just like “fuck it, fuck them” I’ve got an idea, let’s start a band and call it The Simpsons.”

Owens acknowledged that “Girls is obviously a word that cannot be owned by anyone, But a choice was made and anyone that really respected us wouldn’t have used it” so it’s unlikely that we’ll see him launching legal action against the show like the still unresolved dispute between the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the TV show Californication.

There has been no reaction (so far) from the writers of song’s sharing the show’s title – Beastie Boys, Beenie Man, The Prodigy, Sugababes, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Calvin Harris, Death in Vegas, Diana Ross, Marina and The Dimonds, The Sugarhill Gang etc.

A collection of Owens’ comments has been collected by Hipster Runoff:

I love Girls (the band) but it isn't the best band name, let's be honest.

We've got Girls, The Girls, Women, Men, The Men... is/was there a band called Boys?

i think if you call your band something that half the world's population has been at one point, you've gotta expect shit like this...otherwise call your band captain beefheart and his magic band or something

gumbuoy

You know who else stole your band name? Actual girls! Just standing around, stealing your band's name, hanging out in groups of more than 1.

If it's a common thing, why not double up? It worked for Tapes & Tapes.

im sorry but this is fucking stupid. i love the band, but you can't get angry at a tv show for wanting to name themselves after a large segment of the population. 'girls' is a popular fucking word! its not like the bnad was called buttsex with 6 fingered aliens or something

gumbuoy

gumbuoy said on the 20th Apr, 2012

Actually I think you'll find the show named itself after its central characters. However your point stands.

Sounds like the name of a band playing the opening slot on stage six at Soundwave.

They won't have to worry for long, the show has had such negative feedback I wouldn't be surprised if they cut it without finishing the first season. And the negative feedback is spot on, it is the worst show I've seen in a long time.

gumbuoy

Umm, are you sure you're looking at the right show?

Metacritic has it at an 87 - 26 positive reviews, 2 mixed
http://www.metacritic.com/tv/girls/season-1.

Opening night was 1.1million people, which is okay for HBO, and "an improvement on the 210,000 delivered by HBO’s previous (Monday night) comedy debut, Enlightened, which got picked up for a second season."
http://tvline.com/2012/04/16/ratings-hbo-girls-premiere/

Not saying that means you should like it, but I dont know where you're getting the "they'll cut it before the end of the first season" level of negative feedback.

Maybe he's thinking of 'Two Broke Girls' or 'The New Girl'

gumbuoy

gumbuoy said on the 20th Apr, 2012

Possibly, although the US ratings for 2 Broke Girls have been decent, which makes it one of the weirdest shows to ever do well on network television...

Two Broke Girls survival despite its shitness rests very comfortably upon Kat Denning's amazing rack.

I actually think its a good band name, but yeah chill Chris Owens, just rest easy in the fact that you're so fucking cool no matter what

polite_society

I don't think it's a problem. I can't imagine there would be that much confusion. I mean really. "Have you heard of Girls?" "The band, the show or the phenomenon?"

It's not like people are going to show up at your concert expecting the tv show, or visa versa. Though you might get some people at your concert expecting, you know, actual girls, possibly in various configurations of undress.

I've already spent too many keystrokes on this. :/

gumbuoy

gumbuoy said on the 24th Apr, 2012

"Or the gender?"

Rule #1 of deciding on a band name in the 21st Century - make it google-able. That doesn't mean it has to be absolutely 100% unique characters, but picking a common term, like Girls, especially a term which is occasionally used in pornography, is asking for trouble.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 24th Apr, 2012

Another disadvantage that Girls (the band) have is that their rabid fans can't google search for internet forums badmouthing them to go and defend their honour.

You've got to go through a lot of search pages before "Girls suck" results in anything relating to internet forums.

I haven't got a chance to watch this show for myself yet but that poster floating around that implies nepotism as a deciding factor in the casting seems pretty silly.

I'm not sure the drummer from Bad fucking Company has the pull to call HBO out of the blue and demand they employ one of his children.

MorningAfterboy

I reckon he walked into HBO, played this and said "I got laid because of this. Cast the results."

Just a few months after Christopher Owens announced he'd leave his own band, Girls, the singer-songwriter has confirmed details of his debut solo LP. Out January 15 in the U.S. and January 14 in the UK, and titled Lysandre, the record will be released via Fat Possum/Turnstile.http://cdn3.pitchfork.com/news/48343/1a3c7afd.jpeg

Also I think the new song was already posted in the 2013 albums thread.
