Another hip-hop collaborationfor Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon

Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon and Minneapolis rapper Astronautalis have teamed up with Bon Iver drummer S. Carey and producer Ryan Olson (Gayngs, Polica, Marijuana Death Squads) for a new collaboration that is apparently “unlike anything these collaborators have previously created”.

Astronautalis’ most recent album 2011’s This Is Our Science included collaborations with Tegan Quin and members of Midlake, but this indie hip-hop supergroup is planning on a full length collaboration. Not that Astronautalis is too keen on the supergroup tag, he explained to the GimmieNoise blog that “I think you should reserve supergroup qualifications for it until you decide if it’s super or not. I think it’s a band, a pretty cool band.”

Astronautalis, AKA Andy Bothwell, has known Olson for about five years and Vernon for the past two years and following a recent discussion about “studio nerd stuff” the gang made plans to head to Vernon’s April Base studio in Wisconsin to record an album.

“By the time I got there, they had about eight pieces of music done, or roughed out into song form,” Bothwell explained. “Then I just got down there and freestyled for eight hours over everything. When I work with Ryan, it’s the exact opposite of how I work on my own records. I just give him tons and tons of material. He takes it back to his house, and dangles a cigarette out of his mouth, and works for hours on end.”

Bothwell says that the end product won’t be a hip-hop record in the vein of Vernon’s collaborations with Kanye West on the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album: “A lot of my fans are like, ‘Oh this is going to be amazing: Astronautalis rapping and Justin singing choruses.’ It’s not going to be that, I’m sure that all of Justin’s fans are going to be like ‘Oh, it’s a new Bon Iver record and there’s these other guys.’ Everyone’s fans respectively are going to expect certain things.”

As for when we’ll get to hear this “pretty cool band” Bothwell claims that “ All of us are hell-bent on getting it out really quickly, and hopefully to find the time to play some shows for it as well. I think you’ll hear it sooner than you think, and I kinda just wanna leave it at that.”

Very interested to hear this. This is Our Science and Bon Iver, Bon Iver were close to being my two favourite albums of last year.
