The Afghan Whigs reform

After a thirteen year break from live shows The Afghan Whigs will reform to play their gloriously epic songs live at All Tomorrow’s Parties in London next May followed by an appearance at Asbury Park, New Jersey in September.

As the excited press release from ATP announces “Afghan Whigs were one of the most renowned live bands of their time, fusing classic rock with grunge-era distortion and a heavy soul influence, and this long awaited reformation will no doubt be a very special event.”

The band officially broke up in 2001 and reformed briefly in 2006 to record new songs for their career retrospective Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990–2006. (The band’s final album was 1998’s 1965 record ). Since the Whigs split frontman Greg Dulli has recorded and toured with The Gutter Twins (in collaboration with Mark Lanegan) and with The Twilight Singers.

FasterLouder spoke to frontman Greg Dulli back in 2008, on the release The Gutter Twins’ Saturnalia album, and asked him about a possible reformation only to be told that it couldn’t happen as it “would be like re marrying your ex-wife.”

So far the Afgan Whigs reunion only features those two ATP shows… but hopefully someone can convince them to make a trip out to Australia as well. We can dream can’t we?
