Elvis Costello says his newalbum is an "elaborate hoax"

Back in June Trent Reznor warned that a newly reissued version of Pretty Hate Machine was simply “record label bullshit” and urged his fans not to buy the album.

Now Elvis Costello has been forced to take a similar approach with his label offering up a new Costello live compilation, The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook, as a “Super Deluxe Edition” featuring one CD, a DVD and a 10” vinyl EP for the bargain price of just $261.35.

A statement posted on Costello’s website claims that the live recording finds the band “in rare form” and “presents a vivid snapshot of the early days of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook show on “The Revolver Tour” of 2011”. However the message then notes that “There was a time when the release of a new title by your favourite record artist was a cause for excitement and rejoicing but sadly no more… Unfortunately, we at find ourselves unable to recommend this lovely item to you as the price appears to be either a misprint or a satire.”

Costello’s website suggests that “if you should really want to buy something special for your loved one at this time of seasonal giving” you should turn your attention to the Louis Armstrong boxset the Ambassador Of Jazz, which comes in “a cute little imitation suitcase, covered in travel stickers and more importantly containing TEN re-mastered albums by one of the most beautiful and loving revolutionaries who ever lived.” The Armstrong box is available for under one hundred and fifty American dollars and, as Costello points out, “the music is vastly superior”.

If you really, really need the boxset you should take the advice offered by Costello and wait until next year when the “component parts of the above mentioned elaborate hoax, then those items will be available separately at a more affordable price… assuming that you have not already obtained them by more unconventional means.”

Respect, respect, respect. What else to say? I wish more artists were this decent and fair to their fans.
Also, I guess this is just one of those examples showing how record labels today tend to be greedy...
