100 Greatest Music Videos ofAll-Time, according to the NME

With Video Hits axed and MTV now devoted to screening shows about the few people in the world who are more annoying than MTV hosts the music clip appears to be a dying art.

Thankfully the good folk at NME have decided to launch NME Video, a new standalone site which they say will be “dedicated to the best music videos”. It’ll be the best place to see videos from the English bands you need to have an opinion on right now, but won’t remember next month.

To celebrate the launch of the site, NME has put together their list of the 100 Greatest Music Videos of All-Time with Johnny Cash’s tear jerking clip for Hurt taking the number one honours ahead of clips from Bjork, Soundgarden, Chris Isaak and Radiohead. Does NME do music interviews or stories anymore or do they just sit around all day and make lists? LOL

They've realised that lots more people read lists than interviews.

Generic list comment.

Really though, this is arse.

Just should have been #1 - not sure what the Hurt clip looks like, but it seems unlikely to have bested Just.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 6th Jul, 2011

Hurt is good for a video of sad Johnny Cash playing with flashes to a montage of his recently deceased wife, jesus and his past.

It's pretty depressing.

Wait, you've never seen the Hurt video??

Well that's today's Daily Forum Shock done and dusted.

Also, hate to say but pitchfork really do do the video clip rating thing better. Although I've only seen this list and none of the actual commentary by them. But still, this list is woeful.

good to see sabotage so high up on the list.

no "girls on film" by duran duran so i'm afraid it's no "best video clip" list.

Rule number 1 of making a list on the internet:

Leave out a couple of obvious selections because it creates controversy and discussion.

chris isaak - wicked game? #3? how? From memory it's him flopping about on a beach with some half naked girl. It's a good song, but a crap clip.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 6th Jul, 2011

The half naked girl is Helena Christensen.

Wicked Game is awesome.

berlinchair101 said on the 6th Jul, 2011

Um, so wait, what's the problem?

Braveheart81

Clearly the fact that there isn't an R rated version of the film clip.

What would you and your but-i-still-define-indie-cred heart on sleeve know. :D

HIM do a really good cover of Wicked Game.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 6th Jul, 2011

I know nothing about indie cred.

I know a smoking hot chick when I see one though.

Helena Christensen is more hard-on-in-pants than heart-on-sleeve.

that is one rubbish list. 1 and 2 are great but it all goes dreadfully downhill after that (with the very occasional gem). does the nme even know that other countries besides the uk and us make music (and videos to boot)?

plenty of good clips here, but where's pulp "comon people"? and why is guns n' roses "estranged" here? that's got to be one of the worst mv's ever made!??! should also have included gorillaz "feel good inc.", kate bush "moments of pleasure", rammstein "amerika", the knife "we share our mother's health", tall tales & true "lifeboat", queen "innuendo", primal scream "miss lucifer", the cure "lullaby", new order "world", deborah harry "strike me pink", ride "vapour trail", ugly casanova "things i don't remember", and zodiac mindwarp "prime mover".... imo.
