Benicàssim battles theelements

The port town of Benicàssim in Spain was struck by gale force winds on the weekend, forcing cancellations and evacuations from the mighty Benicàssim music festival. Nashville superstars Kings Of Leon were forced to pull out of their headline slot on Friday because of “high winds and the subsequent unsafe conditions”.

As reported by BBC News, the storm also caused 1,500 revellers to be evacuated from the campsite, with many tents destroyed or blown away. The winds reached 75 kilometres per hour. For added drama, a fire broke out near the festival grounds, obscuring Tom Tom Club’s set in smoke.

Elsewhere on the weekend, Oasis was plagued by sound issues (Noel Gallagher declared it “a joke”), Lily Allen cancelled with gastroenteritis and plenty of bands actually managed to play enjoyable sets. Benicàssim is renowned as a summery alternative to the squelch of Glastonbury and co., but it seems even Spaniards can’t escape the elements.

Watch out, here comes the wind. Ah, festivals.
