Jesus Was A Democrat

Yep, that’s the title of the new single from Everclear (remember them?) and it’s likely to ruffle a few feathers over at Fox News. The Portland band, whose star has dwindled somewhat since Sparkle and Fade and So Much For The Afterglow, is offering Jesus Was A Democrat as a free download on its website.

Timing the song’s release to coincide with the escalating US Presidential campaign will either prove Everclear’s savviest moment to date or yet another fizzler. The lyrics sure are sassy: “I bet you think of him, as a nice clean long haired republican / Nah, he would be all locked up in Guantanamo Bay, if he were alive today.” And just to hammer the point home: “Jesus Christ didn’t have blue eyes or blond hair / He looked just like all those people that you want to kill.”

Anyway, here it is for your consideration/praise/derision.

'dwindled somewhat' should read crashed and burned. What irrelevant band will crawl out of the woodwork next - Cool for August, Hootie, Gin Blossoms?

Wouldn't want to offend any fans.

I saw Everclear at the Enmore Theatre in 1997.

I had pretty average (read commercial) taste in music back then and thought they were an awesome band.

I certainly won't be getting excited about a new single...

My personal highlights of the VHS: Insane Clown Posse! Creed! Limp Bizkit! Alanis Morrisette! Something else awful! I should have a look for that video....

Really.. how many festivals had DMX follow Sheryl Crow, RHCP follow Creed and Jewel, and Ice Cube follow Everclear? The answer - none! And that's why it went down so well..

Yes, the love was certainly in the air that weekend.
