in the 1st announcement of the music line, no years is pleased to reveal that the dum dum girls will be filling the turbine room with their signature blend of the girl-gang eyeliner punk of the shangri-las, the trashy propulsion of the cramps, and the moody atmospherics of mazzy star.
hailing from california, dum dum girls have amassed mountains of touring time off the back of their debut lp, “i will be”. with their sophomore release “only in dreams” the all girl four-piece recorded in josh hommes’ pink duck studios with blondie’s producer richard goettehrer. the dum dum girls combine 60s pop sensibility with a 90s punk ethic. the lyrical content was inspired by the loss of frontwoman dee dee’s mother to a fatal illness, and is a “very real” record about “very recent, very real things”. “only in dreams” more than fulfills the dum dum girls‘’ promise, with impassioned, front-and-centre vocals from dee dee that sometimes recall one of her heroines,
chrissie hynde; big singalong choruses draped with almost choral harmonies; a chugging wash of guitars drenched in reverb, tremelo and fuzz; and mighty, booming bass and drums. see in 2012 with some total babes who could probably slay zombies with their guitars alone.
“only in dreams, the second dum dum girls album, seethes with a beautiful, raging confidence, louder and fuller than anything they’ve done before, and better than the onetime peers they’re leaving behind.”
– the new york times
they will be joined by interstate multi-instrumentalist, multi-talented vocalist and producer jonti. having just worked with uber-producer mark ronson and hodgy beats from ofwgtka, jonti is cutting a swathe across
the world. with debut album “twirligig” due for release on october 18th through mistletone/inertia in australia and stones throw records in the usa, jonti has already had the likes of kcrw singing his praises.
“when i think of how to write about jonti’s music, i don’t feel like writing at all. i feel like drawing a picture, with watercolors and maybe crayon – colorful, abstract, youthfully curious and open to interpretation. maybe then i’d staple, glue or nail some found objects to it, recontextualising their
intended purpose into something strange and beautiful.” – jeremy sole (radio host, kcrw los angeles)
the south african who now calls australia home spent countless hours studying records like they were books and testing his theories on a four-track recorder. he’s dabbled with the likes of santigold, sean lennon and
producer john agnello famed for his work with sonic youth. whilst he draws inspiration from artists like madilab, stereolab, free design and the beach boys, his music is all about making something very complex
look easy and fun. and his electronic sun-bleached sounds capture the summer just perfectly.
as the sun sets over the powerhouse on new year’s eve, crickets chirp in the distance and jonti gets your twinkletoes dancing and your lips cracking a smile.
also announced is brisbane purveyors of sunshine pop ball park music, who will have you feeling it’s nice to be alive despite the doomsayers hailing the apocalypse come 2012. with the release of their debut album “happiness and surrounding suburbs” ball park music have become not only one of brisbane’s favourite acts, but also made their place on the national stage thanks to some avid support from triple j.
apart from selling out their hometown gigs, the sextet has toured with the likes of boy & bear, cloud control, hungry kids of hungary, philadelphia grand jury, eagle and the worm and big scary amongst others, while winning plenty of new fans through sets at the gold coast big day out, falls festival, southbound, sunset sounds and good vibrations festivals.
the powerhouse will become more than just a festival as cult gallery, nine lives takes over the premises to curate the space throughout no years. nine lives have forged a name for themselves with quality local, na- tional and international artists including the likes of cutting edge artists anthony lister, andy jenkins, jonathan zawada, numskull, french, & courtney brims to pin point a few. in recent times the guys have curated spaces for splendour in the grass and st. jeromes laneway festivals.
in the next three weeks no years will be making some big additions to the full lineup as the countdown to 2012 begins! there will also be a special guest to curate the midnight countdown. even if the four horseman
decide their time has come to make a comeback, or bruce willis doesn’t save the day, at least we can all say we brought in the new year in style
they are my favorite indie-rock quartet in australia.. truly one of the most appealing indie musicians in town even my music teacher likes em..
